October 6, 2017 – FRIDAY, 26th Week in Ordinary Time

St. Bruno, Priest and Religious Founder

Bl. Marie-Rose Durocher, Religious Founder

Green

Bar 1:15- 22 ILk 10: 13 - 16

Born in Cologne, St. Bruno (1030 - 1101) founded the Carthusians (1084), an order of cloistered contemplatives.

Born in Quebec, Canada, Bl. Marie-Rose Durocher (1811 - 1849), at the request of the bishop and with the help of the Oblates of Mary Immaculate, founded the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary (1843), a religious institute modeled on one of the same name in Marseilles, France, with the purpose of providing religious education to the poorest and abandoned children.

FROM THE FIRST READING:          Bar 1: 20- 22

Because of this, from the day on which the Lord brought our fathers out of the land of Egypt, so as to give them a land flowing with milk and honey, the evils and the curse which the Lord, pronounced by Moses, his servant, have dogged our footsteps right down to the present day. We did not listen to the voice of the Lord our God speaking through the words of the prophets whom he sent to us, but each one of us followed his perverted heart, serving false gods and doing what displeases the Lord our God

GOSPEL READING:           Lk 10: 13 - 16

Jesus said, "Alas for you Chorazin! Alas for you Bethsaida! So many miracles have been worked in you! If the same miracles had been performed in Tyre and Sidon, they would already be sitting in ashes and wearing the sackcloth of repentance. Surely, for Tyre and Sidon it will be better than for you on the Judgment Day. And what of you, city of Capernaum? Will you be lifted up to heaven? You will be thrown down to the place of the dead.

"Whoever listens to you listens to me, and whoever rejects you rejects me; and he who rejects me, rejects the One who sent me."

REFLECTION

We all face many different trials in life -deaths, sickness and pain, failures and rejections, broken relationships and lives. In the midst of these trials God continues his presence for us through other people who help us, through his grace and inspiration in prayer. Understandably many times we fail to see his presence with us.

Both readings today speak of man rejecting God. In the first reading the prophet acknowledges evil inflicted on Israel for their infidelity and disobedience to their covenanted God. In the Gospel reading Jesus bewails Chorazin, Bethsaida and Capernaum, towns where Jesus taught and performed so many miracles and good works, for not believing in Jesus and his message: "Will you be lifted up to heaven? You will be thrown down to the place of the dead."

Speaking to his disciples and really to people of all times, Jesus says, "Whoever listens to you listens to me, and whoever rejects you rejects me; and he who rejects me, rejects the One who sent me."

Are we anxious to listen to God?
