SATURDAY, 5th Week of Easter

May 5, 2018 – SATURDAY, 5th Week of Easter

White.

Acts 16: 1 - 10 / Jn 15: 18 – 21

FROM THE 1ST READING:             Acts 16: 9- 10

There one night Paul had a vision. A Macedonian stood before him and begged him, "Come over to Macedonia and help us!" When he awoke, he told us of this vision and we understood that the Lord was calling us to give the Good News to the Macedonian people.

GOSPEL READING:           Jn 15: 18- 21

Jesus said to his disciples, "If the world hates you, remember that the world hated me before you. This would not be so if you belonged to the world, because the world loves its own. But you are not of the world since I have chosen you from the world: because of this the world hates you.

"Remember what I told you: the servant is not greater than his master; if they persecuted me, they will persecute you, too. Have they kept my teaching? Will they then keep yours? All this they will do to you for the sake of my name because they do not know the One who sent me."

REFLECTION St. Paul's mission to the Gentiles is confirmed

t h e v1·s1· on

he had: "Come over to Macedonia and help us!" It was God who was guiding Paul in his mission to the Gentiles, as God's "chosen instrument to bring my [God's] name to the pagan nations and their kings, and the people of Israel as well." (Acts 9: 15)

Similarly each one of us has a mission or special calling in our life: hopefully we can discern and find out what the Holy Spirit is leading us to do.

In the Gospel reading Jesus spells out to his disciples what discipleship is all about: A disciple is one who follows his master. The disciple of a suffering Servant follows his master. As he told his disciples after Peter's profession of faith in him as the Messiah, "If you want to follow me, deny yourself, take up your cross and follow me." (Mk 8: 34)

If we wish to follow Jesus we soon find out we must reject the prevalent values of the world. We soon realize that oftentimes the values of Christ are opposed to the values of the world. If we follow Christ who was rejected and persecuted, we too should expect to be rejected and persecuted. The greater the difficulties we meet, the closer we come to our Lord's life and example, "Fortunate are you, when people insult and persecute you and speak all kinds of evil against you because you are my followers. Be glad and joyful, for a great reward is kept for you in God." (Mt 5: 11 - 12a)

Am I ready to be a disciple of Christ?
