WEDNESDAY 1ST WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME – YEAR II
WEDNESDAY 1ST WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME – YEAR II
1 Sm 3:1-10, 19-20 / Mk 1:29-39
1 SAMUEL 3:1-10, 19-20
The boy Samuel ministered to Yahweh under Eli's care in a time in
which the word of Yahweh was rarely heard; visions were not seen. One
night Eli was lying down in his room, half blind as he was. The lamp
of God was still lighted and Samuel also lay in the house of Yahweh
near the Ark of God. Then Yahweh called, "Samuel! Samuel!" Samuel
answered, "I am here!" and ran to Eli saying, "I am here, did you not
call me?" But Eli said, "I did not call, go back to sleep." So he went
and lay down. Then Yahweh called again, "Samuel!" and Samuel stood up
and went to Eli saying, "You called me; I am here." But Eli answered,
"I did not call you, my son. Go back to sleep." Samuel did not yet
know Yahweh and the word of Yahweh had not yet been revealed to him.
But Yahweh called Samuel for the third time and, as he went again to
Eli saying, "I am here for you have called me," Eli realized that it
was Yahweh calling the boy. So he said to Samuel, "Go, lie down, and
if he calls you again, answer: "Speak, Yahweh, your servant listens."
Then Yahweh came and stood there calling as he did before, "Samuel!
Samuel!" And Samuel answered, "Speak, for your servant listens."
Samuel grew; Yahweh was with him and made all his words become true.
All Israel, from Dan to Beersheba, knew that Samuel was really
Yahweh's prophet.
MARK 1:29-39
On leaving the synagogue, Jesus went to the home of Simon and Andrew
with James and John. As Simon's mother-in-law was sick in bed with
fever, they immediately told him about her. Jesus went to her and,
taking her by the hand, raised her up. The fever left her and she
began to wait on them. That evening at sundown, people brought to
Jesus all the sick and those who had evil spirits: the whole town was
pressing around the door. Jesus healed many who had various diseases,
and drove out many demons; but he did not let them speak, for they
knew who he was. Jesus' prayer at night (Lk 4:42) Very early in the
morning, before daylight, Jesus went off to a lonely place where he
prayed. Simon and the others went out also, searching for him; and
when they found him, they said, "Everyone is looking for you." Then
Jesus answered, "Let's go to the nearby villages so that I may preach
there too; for that is why I came." So Jesus set out to preach in all
the synagogues throughout Galilee; he also cast out demons.
REFLECTION
Soon after Jesus began his public life, he went to Simon's home where
Simon's mother-in-law was sick, and cured her. She immediately arose
and served them. There he healed the sick who came to him. At daybreak
he went alone to pray, then he continued his preaching and healing
wherever he could. There are many things we can learn here.
Jesus readily helped all who needed him, regardless of his own
tiredness. Let us put the needs of others before our own despite our
tiredness. We may never be able to preach or cure, but let us try in
our own special way to bring God to those around us. Let us help the
sick as best we can. And, at the beginning of our day, let us be alone
with God and listen to what He wants us to do.
We can imitate the first apostles who immediately followed Christ's
first call. Let us try our best to listen to God telling us what to
do. We can imitate Simon's mother-in-law who, right after her cure,
got up to serve. Let us live a life of service – for God and for our
neighbors.

TUESDAY 1ST WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME – YEAR II
TUESDAY 1ST WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME – YEAR II
1 Sm 1:9-20 / Mk 1:21-28 or 1Sm 1:1-8 and 1:9-20 / Mk 1:14-20 and
1:21-28
1 SAMUEL 1:9-20
After they had eaten and drunk in Shiloh, Hannah stood up not far from
Eli, the priest: his seat was beside the doorpost of Yahweh's house.
Deeply distressed she wept and prayed to Yahweh and made this vow, "O
Yahweh of hosts, if only you will have compassion on your maidservant
and give me a son, I will put him in your service for as long as he
lives and no razor shall touch his head." As she prayed before Yahweh,
Eli observed the movement of her lips. Hannah was praying silently;
she moved her lips but uttered no sound and Eli thought Hannah was
drunk. He, therefore, said to her: "For how long will you be drunk?
Let your drunkenness pass." But Hannah answered: "No, my lord, I am a
woman in great distress, not drunk. I have not drunk wine or strong
drink, but I am pouring out my soul before Yahweh. Do not take me for
a bad woman. I was so afflicted that my prayer flowed continuously."
Then Eli said, "Go in peace and may the God of Israel grant you what
you asked for." Hannah answered, "Let your maidservant deserve your
kindness." Then she left the temple and when she was at table, she
seemed a different woman. Elkanah rose early in the morning and
worshiped before Yahweh with his wives. Then they went back home to
Ramah. When Elkanah slept with his wife, Hannah, Yahweh took
compassion on her, and she became pregnant. She gave birth to a son
and called him Samuel because she said: "I have asked Yahweh to give
him to me."
MARK 1:21-28
They went into the town of Capernaum and Jesus taught in the synagogue
on the sabbath day. The people were astonished at the way he taught,
for he spoke as one having authority and not like the teachers of the
Law. It happened that a man with an evil spirit was in their
synagogue, and he shouted, "What do you want with us, Jesus of
Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are: you are the
Holy One of God." Then Jesus faced him and said with authority, "Be
silent, and come out of this man!" The evil spirit shook the man
violently and, with a loud shriek, came out of him. All the people
were astonished, and they wondered, "What is this? With what authority
he preaches! He even gives orders to evil spirits and they obey him!"
And Jesus' fame spread throughout all the country of Galilee.
REFLECTION
In today's Gospel, Jesus shows his power over unclean spirits or the
devil. Men by themselves cannot overcome the devil, who is a fallen
angel. Jesus came to redeem men and liberate them from the power of
the devil.
By his expulsion of devils or unclean spirits when he was on earth,
Jesus teaches us that he has power over devils and can free us from
slavery to Satan. He can give us confidence to fight and conquer the
temptations of the devil. Jesus is also ready to help us in our
struggle against men who are agents and instruments of the devil, who
want us to fall into sin.
We must do our part to cooperate with grace, which is the help we
receive from Jesus. An important way to cooperate with the help of
Jesus is to avoid occasions of sin, meaning those persons, places, or
things that lead us to sin.
There is an expression: "Do not tempt God." This means we should not
expose ourselves to unnecessary danger while expecting God to save us
from that danger. It is like forcing God to work a miracle to save us.
This is "to tempt God."
