WEDNESDAY BEFORE EPIPHANY

JANUARY 2, 2013
WEDNESDAY BEFORE EPIPHANY
MEMORIAL, STS BASIL THE GREAT AND GREGORY NAZIAZEN, BISHOPS AND DOCTORS

1 Jn 2:22-28 / Ps 98: 1. 2-3ab. 3cd-4/ Jn 1:19-28

1 JOHN 2:22-28
Who is the liar? The one who denies that Jesus is the Christ. This is an antichrist, who denies both the Father and the Son. The one who denies the Son is without the Father, and those who acknowledge the Son also have the Father. Let what you heard from the beginning remain in you. If what you heard from the beginning remains in you, you, too, will remain in the Son and in the Father. And this is the promise he himself gave us: eternal life. I write this to you thinking of those who try to lead you astray. You received from him an anointing, and it remains in you, so you do not need someone to teach you. His anointing teaches you all things, it speaks the truth and does not lie to you; so remain in him, and keep what he has taught you. And now, my children, live in him, so that when he appears in his glory, we may be confident and not ashamed before him when he comes.

JOHN 1:19-28
This was the testimony of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites to ask him, "Who are you?" John recognized the truth, and did not deny it. He said, "I am not the Messiah." And they asked him, "Then who are you? Elijah?" He answered, "I am not." They said, "Are you the Prophet?" And he answered, "No." Then they said to him, "Tell us who you are, so that we can give some answer to those who sent us. How do you see yourself?" And John said, quoting the prophet Isaiah, "I am the voice of one crying out in the wilderness: Make straight the way of the Lord!" Those who had been sent were Pharisees; and they put a further question to John, "Then why are you baptizing, if you are not the Messiah, or Elijah, or the Prophet?" John answered, "I baptize you with water, but among you stands one whom you do not know; although he comes after me, I am not worthy to untie the strap of his sandal." This happened in Bethabara beyond the Jordan, where John was baptizing.

REFLECTION
The Christmas holidays are over. Hopefully we have spent the past weeks in love and thanksgiving to the newborn Son of God. Hopefully our families have become closer and grateful for the blessings of the past year. Even if the past year wasn't so good, we must still be grateful for the greatest blessing God has given to us – His beloved Son Jesus. Now as we begin a new year, let us be reminded to let the Holy Spirit guide us in our daily undertakings. Let God be a light for our paths and a lamp for our eyes. He has filled us with His Truth so let Him remain with us always.

St. John the Baptist was a man filled with the Holy Spirit. He was always telling the people to wait for the coming of the Messiah. His life was in function of another – Jesus, the Anointed One. He called men to repent and amend their sinful ways. For him, Jesus is the One who will renew everything. Let us believe in his words which should serve as a light for our paths. Let us "make a straight path for the Lord." Let us live uprightly in anticipation for the coming of the Messiah in our lives.

SOLEMNITY, MARY, MOTHER OF GOD

JANUARY 1, 2013
SOLEMNITY, MARY, MOTHER OF GOD

Nm 6:22-27 / Ps 67: 2-3. 5. 6. 8 (2a) / Gal 4:4-7 / Lk 2:16-21

NUMBERS 6:22-27
Then Yahweh spoke to Moses saying, "Speak to Aaron and his sons and say to them: This is how you shall bless the people of Israel; you shall say: May Yahweh bless you and keep you! May Yahweh let his face shine on you, and be gracious to you! May Yahweh look kindly on you, and give you his peace! In that way shall they put my name on the people of Israel and I will bless them."

GALATIANS 4:4-7
But when the fullness of time came, God sent his Son. He came born of woman and subject to the Law, in order to redeem the subjects of the Law, that we might receive adoption as children of God. And because you are children, God has sent into your hearts the Spirit of his Son which cries out: Abba! that is, Father! You yourself are no longer a slave but a son or daughter, and yours is the inheritance by God's grace.

LUKE 2:16-21
So they came hurriedly, and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby lying in the manger. On seeing him they related what they had been told about the child, and all were astonished on hearing the shepherds. As for Mary, she treasured all these words, and pondered them in her heart. The shepherds then returned, giving glory and praise to God for all they had heard and seen, just as the angels had told them. On the eighth day the circumcision of the baby had to be performed; he was named Jesus, the name the angel had given him before he was conceived.

REFLECTION
"As for Mary, she treasured all these words, and pondered them in her heart."

Mary must have been fourteen, maybe sixteen years old at the most when she accepted the biggest job of her life – to be the mother of our Christ. The next time this was written about her in the bible was when she and St. Joseph lost and later found the teen Jesus in the temple. When we remember how we were at sixteen, reflective and pondering may not likely be the words to describe us. More likely it would be, rebellious and strong minded; or raring to assert independence.

But even now, as an adult, having this reflective trait may not come so quickly. How often do we immediately react to situations and to people and later find ourselves regretting some action we took or the hurtful words that we let out? It takes a certain maturity and trust in the Lord that all things happen for a reason and play out according to God's plan and at His prescribed time.

Let us ask Mama Mary to help us be like her; to help us grow in our relationship with Jesus and our Father; to have the ability to absorb and reflect before reacting and to pray for an increased awareness of who we are – our strengths and weaknesses. When we are self-aware, we act rather than react. Mama Mary modeled prudence to us. That is, the ability to do what is needed from us at the right time and place. Even Mama Mary spoke out as she did during the wedding at Cana. If we learn to ponder over things, God's plan eventually unfolds. When we act after such reflection, we slowly see ourselves as part of God's plan unfolding.
