Memorial, Saint Therese of the Child Jesus, virgin and doctor

October 1, 2013

Tuesday 26th Week in Ordinary Time – Year I

Memorial, Saint Therese of the Child Jesus, virgin and doctor

Zec 8:20-23 / Ps 87: 1b-3. 4-5. 6-7 / Lk 9:51-56

Zechariah 8:20-23

Yahweh, the God of hosts speaks, "People will come from other nations, people from great cities. The inhabitants of one town will talk with those of another and say: 'Come, let us go and implore the favor of Yahweh, and I, too, will seek Yahweh.' Many great peoples and powerful nations will come seeking Yahweh, God of hosts, in Jerusalem and pray to him." Yahweh, the God of hosts assures you, "In those days ten men of different languages spoken in various lands, will take hold of a Jew by the hem of his garment and say: We, too, want to go with you for we have heard that God is with you."

Luke 9:51-56

As the Time drew near when Jesus would be taken up to heaven, he made up his mind to go to Jerusalem. He sent ahead of him some messengers, who entered a Samaritan village to prepare a lodging for him. But the people would not receive him, because he was on his way to Jerusalem. Seeing this, James and John, his disciples, said, "Lord, do you want us to call down fire from heaven to reduce them to ashes?" Jesus turned and rebuked them, and they went on to another village.

REFLECTION

Let us reflect today on the immense love of Jesus Christ for us – a love that respects our freedom. Many moments in our life we, like the people of Samaria, act in the same hostile way, not knowing it is the Lord who is passing by and visiting us. What are some of the moments that Jesus could be passing by? He often takes the form of a little one, someone of no importance to whom we do not pay attention and whom we can easily reject. A poor one perhaps? Or a relative who needs consolation? Someone sick who may need medical help? Or a situation that is not expected? A failure in life? Jesus is always passing in our lives, in good times and bad times. This passing is always to help us grow stronger in faith, for us to hold steadfast to his teachings and to seek first his kingdom. Let us not reject anything that does not seem good for us, an irritation to our plans, a disappointment, etc. Let us pray instead for the gift of understanding and patience - the gift of fortitude in times of trials. And most especially the gift of wisdom to discern when the Lord is passing.
