Please help the victims of Super Typhoon Haiyan

Please help the victims of Super Typhoon Haiyan

Millions of families are reeling from massive loss caused by a category 5 typhoon that claimed an estimated 10 thousand lives and leveled homes, towns and cities. Super Typhoon Haiyan struck the Philippines in the early hours of November 8 and is the strongest tropical cyclone on record to make landfall. The official international humanitarian relief agency of the Catholic Church in the U.S., Catholic Relief Services (CRS), says, "As we gain increased access to areas struck by Typhoon Haiyan, we are seeing the fuller picture of its devastation, which is catastrophic. Images from the sky and stories on the ground tell scenes of families pulled apart, villages and homes washed away, and lives claimed by rushing waters. We are reminded of the severity of loss in the Indian Ocean tsunami of 2004 and Haiti earthquake of 2010.  Millions of people need help." Please pray for the victims and give generously by going to donate.crs.org/Haiyan.

Year of Faith

Dear friends in the Lord,

Last weekend, we here in New York watched on television, heard on radio, and remained
attuned to other news announcements available through electronic devices accounts of the
typhoon that struck the Philippines and Vietnam, leaving more than ten thousand dead,
thousands upon thousands wounded, and just as many without food and shelter.

First and foremost, we pray for the afflicted and their loved ones, aware that many loved
ones are also here in the Archdiocese of New York. May the Lord be with them in a special way
at this time.

Also, as the archdiocese has done in response to past international tragedies, we will take
up a special second collection this Sunday so as to add financial assistance to our prayers. Our
contribution will be sent immediately, while the need is at its greatest. Please be as generous as
you can.

With gratitude and prayerful best wishes, I am,

Faithfully in Christ,
Timothy Michael Cardinal Dolan
Archbishop of New York

Friday 32nd Week in Ordinary Time - Year I

November 15, 2013

Friday 32nd Week in Ordinary Time - Year I

Memorial, St. Roch Gonzalez, John del Castillo and Alphonsus Rodriguez, priests and martyrs

Wis 13:1-9 / Ps 19: 2-3. 4-5ab / Lk 17:26-37

Wisdom 13:1-9

The natural helplessness of humans is seen in their ignorance of God. The experience of good things did not lead them to the knowledge of Him who is. They were interested in his works, but they did not recognize the author of them. Fire, wind, air, the sphere of the stars, rushing water and the lights in the sky were held as the rulers of the world. If, charmed by such beauty, they took them for gods, let them know how far superior is their sovereign. And if they were impressed by their power and activity, let them understand from this how much mightier is he who formed them. For the grandeur and beauty of creatures lead us to ponder on their Author, greater and more magnificent. No doubt these people are not to be blamed severely, for possibly they strayed though they searched for God and desired to find him. They pondered over the created things that surrounded them and were captivated by the sight of such beauty. Even so they are not to be excused, for if they were able to explore the world, why did they not discover first the world's Sovereign?

Luke 17:26-37

As it was in the days of Noah, so will it be on the day the Son of Man comes. In those days people ate and drank and got married; but on the day Noah entered the ark, the flood came and destroyed them all. So it was in the days of Lot: people ate and drank, and bought and sold, and planted and built; but on the day Lot left Sodom, God made fire and sulfur rain down from heaven, which destroyed them all. So will it be on the day the Son of Man is revealed. On that day, if you are on the rooftop, don't go down into the house to get your belongings; and if you happen to be in the fields, do not turn back. Remember Lot's wife! Whoever tries to save his life will lose himself, but whoever gives his life will be born again. I tell you, though two men are sharing the same bed, it might happen that one will be taken, and the other left; though two women are grinding corn together, one might be taken and the other left." Then they asked Jesus, "Where will this take place, Lord?" And he answered, "Where the body is, there too will the vultures gather."

Reflection

The author of the first reading criticizes men who worship nature. They are too much in awe of the beauty and grandeur of the stars, the wind, the air, etc. He says that these men should instead worship the God who made them all. Up to now there are still people who are so in awe of the physical world but are blind to the spiritual realities. What a pity!

The gospel, on the other hand, warns us not to be too engrossed with our daily life activities so much so that when God comes at the end of time, we are incapable of reacting correctly. People who live without any thought of God will naturally be surprised by the sudden coming of the Messiah. Therefore, in order to be ready for Christ's return, we must be conscious of his presence in our daily life. If we are aware of the spiritual dimension of our lives, then we can be more in tune with the movements of the Spirit. Those who listen to the word of God and the movement of the Spirit live more meaningful lives and have better relationships with their fellowmen.
