Sg 2:8 - 14 [or Zep 3: 14-18a] / Lk 1:39 – 45
1st Reading: Sg 2: 8 - 14
The voice of my lover! Behold he comes, springing across the mountains, jumping over the hills, like a gazelle or a young stag. Now he stands behind our wall, looking through the windows, peering through the lattice. My lover speaks to me.
"Arise, my love, my beautiful one! Come, the winter is gone, the rains are over. Flowers have appeared on earth; the season of singing has come; the cooing of doves is heard. The fig tree forms its early fruit, the vines in blossom are fragrant. Arise, my beautiful one, come with me, my love, come.
O my dove in the rocky cleft, in the secret places of the cliff, let me see your face, let me hear your voice. Your face – how lovely! Your voice – how sweet!"
Reflection
The Song of Songs is all about love, happiness, pleasure and yearning. Our Lord is our beloved as we always look forward to another good day to dedicate to him. His voice, his words, fill us with delight and knowledge. He looks over us, guiding our every step. He assures us that our suffering, known as winter in this reading, is about to be over. Time is ever changing, the children are growing, and his presence is overwhelming, and for these we are to celebrate and be happy. As the saying goes, every sixty seconds spent sad is a minute of happiness we'll never get back.
Sadness has a purpose and there are times when we feel we cannot endure a devastating experience, but this should be a temporary state. This should not stop us from being positive in our life situations no matter how hard or grave they are. We may have a time of mourning and days in tears, but this should not last a lifetime. Things happen for a reason: to make us stronger, to make us learn, to show us how to get up from a fall. Let us lift up our burdens to the good Lord, and he will give us rest, he will give us peace. Listen to him:
"Arise, my love, my beautiful one! Come, the winter is gone, the rains are over. Flowers have appeared on earth; the season of singing has come; the cooing of doves is heard. The fig tree forms its early fruit, the vines in blossom are fragrant. Arise, my beautiful one, come with me, my love, come.
