THURSDAY 24TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME – YEAR II
MEMORIAL, STS CORNELIUS, POPE AND MARTYR, AND CYPRIAN, BISHOP AND
MARTYR
THURSDAY 24TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME – YEAR II
FIRST CORINTHIANS 15:1-11
I want to make quite clear to you, brothers, what the message of the
gospel that I preached to you is; you accepted it and took your stand
on it, and you are saved by it, if you keep to the message I preached
to you; otherwise your coming to believe was in vain. The tradition I
handed on to you in the first place, a tradition which I had myself
received, was that Christ died for our sins, in accordance with the
scriptures, and that he was buried; and that on the third day, he was
raised to life, in accordance with the scriptures; and that he
appeared to Cephas; and later to the Twelve; and next he appeared to
more than five hundred of the brothers at the same time, most of whom
are still with us, though some have fallen asleep; then he appeared to
James, and then to all the apostles. Last of all he appeared to me
too, as though I was a child born abnormally. For I am the least of
the apostles and am not really fit to be called an apostle, because I
had been persecuting the Church of God; but what I am now, I am
through the grace of God, and the grace which was given to me has not
been wasted. Indeed, I have worked harder than all the others -- not
I, but the grace of God which is with me. Anyway, whether it was they
or I, this is what we preach and what you believed.
LUKE 7:36-50
One of the Pharisees invited him to a meal. When he arrived at the
Pharisee's house and took his place at table, suddenly a woman came
in, who had a bad name in the town. She had heard he was dining with
the Pharisee and had brought with her an alabaster jar of ointment.
She waited behind him at his feet, weeping, and her tears fell on his
feet, and she wiped them away with her hair; then she covered his feet
with kisses and anointed them with the ointment. When the Pharisee who
had invited him saw this, he said to himself, 'If this man were a
prophet, he would know who this woman is and what sort of person it is
who is touching him and what a bad name she has.' Then Jesus took him
up and said, 'Simon, I have something to say to you.' He replied, 'Say
on, Master.' 'There was once a creditor who had two men in his debt;
one owed him five hundred denarii, the other fifty. They were unable
to pay, so he let them both off. Which of them will love him more?'
Simon answered, 'The one who was let off more, I suppose.' Jesus said,
'You are right.' Then he turned to the woman and said to Simon, 'You
see this woman? I came into your house, and you poured no water over
my feet, but she has poured out her tears over my feet and wiped them
away with her hair. You gave me no kiss, but she has been covering my
feet with kisses ever since I came in. You did not anoint my head with
oil, but she has anointed my feet with ointment. For this reason I
tell you that her sins, many as they are, have been forgiven her,
because she has shown such great love. It is someone who is forgiven
little who shows little love.' Then he said to her, 'Your sins are
forgiven.' Those who were with him at table began to say to
themselves, 'Who is this man, that even forgives sins?' But he said to
the woman, 'Your faith has saved you; go in peace.'
REFLECTION
Imagine that we have such a huge debt to pay strict creditors, then
suddenly Jesus comes to our rescue and gives us the funds to cover
this bill. How would we feel at that very moment? What would our
reaction be to our Lord who generously swoops in to lend his support
and to save us from a sure prison sentence?
Maybe in this instance, we can begin to empathize with the sinful
woman who washed Jesus' feet with her hair. She must have been so
grateful to be freed from the harsh judgment of society. Here was a
holy man who looked on her with love and complete understanding. He
accepted her for who she is. And this is what inspires her to convert
and become a better person.
We've all had our share of falling short and not really living up to
what is expected. But God doesn't shoo us away? In fact, He embraces
us more and gently nudges us to keep doing our best. There is no
prerequisite to earning His love. It will always be there whether we
remain on the righteous path or if we unintentionally stray elsewhere.
May we always appreciate such wonderful and mysterious love.

MEMORIAL, OUR LADY OF SORROWS
MEMORIAL, OUR LADY OF SORROWS
WEDNESDAY 24TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME – YEAR II
HEBREWS 5:7-9
During his life on earth, he offered up prayer and entreaty, with loud
cries and with tears, to the one who had the power to save him from
death, and, winning a hearing by his reverence, he learnt obedience,
Son though he was, through his sufferings; when he had been perfected,
he became for all who obey him the source of eternal salvation
JOHN 19:25-27
Near the cross of Jesus stood his mother and his mother's sister, Mary
the wife of Clopas, and Mary of Magdala. Seeing his mother and the
disciple whom he loved standing near her, Jesus said to his mother,
'Woman, this is your son.' Then to the disciple he said, 'This is your
mother.' And from that hour the disciple took her into his home.
REFLECTION
What is more difficult to endure? Is it physical pain or discomfort,
or is the psychological stress in seeing our loved ones in anguish?
This scene in the passion and death of our Lord Jesus Christ, still
speaks powerfully to us. As the beloved disciple, we can see Jesus,
our master, teacher and friend in great pain and anguish as he hangs
on the cross, with the nails tearing at his wounds, Jesus sees the
confusion and grief of his beloved disciple. He also sees the quiet
and tender faith amidst great anguish and sorrow of his beloved mother
who had always supported him in his work and mission.
Amidst his torment, his heart cries out, who will take care of my
mother, who will care and guide my friends and disciples in continuing
my work for all generations? And so in his great suffering, he said to
his mother, "Woman, behold your son". He wants to say, "Mama, look at
me, your beloved son. Even in my pain and anguish, I love you so much.
Also look beside you, my "beloved brother" in his confusion and grief.
Please take care of him and his friends and take them as your own
children". Then, he says to his beloved disciple, "Behold your
mother". "Look at my mother; she will now be a mother to you as she is
to me. Respect and honor her in the same way I respect and honor her.
She will care for you in the same way she cares for me. She will be
your consolation in your grief and confusion. She will hold you in her
heart as she holds me in her heart".
For us, Jesus' disciples and brothers or sisters living in the
Philippines 20 centuries later, what is the good news that the
evangelist John wants to convey to us when he narrated this event in
the passion of our Lord Jesus?
