WEDNESDAY, 1st Week of Lent

March 8, 2017 – WEDNESDAY, 1st Week of Lent
St. John of God, Religious Founder
Violet

Jon 3: 1- 10 / Lk 11: 29 - 32

St. John of God (1495 - 1550) worked for the sick in Granada, Spain; he founded the Order of Brothers Hospitaliers of St. John of God, dedicated to help the infirm.

FROM THE 1ST READING:     Jon 3: 7- 10
Then the seers will be disgraced and the diviners put to shame. They will all cover their faces because no answer will come from God. But as for me, I am filled with might, with the spirit of Yahweh, with justice and courage, to declare to Jacob his transgressions, to Israel his sins.

Hear this, leaders of the nation of Jacob, rulers of the house of Israel, you who despise justice and pervert what is right, you who build Zion with blood and Jerusalem with crime.

GOSPEL READING:     Lk 11: 29- 32
As the crowd increased, Jesus began to speak in this way, "People of the present time are evil people. They ask for a sign, but no sign will be given to them except the sign of Jonah. As Jonah became a sign for the people of Nineveh, so will the Son of Man be a sign for this generation.

"The Queen of the South will rise up on Judgment Day with people of these times and accuse them, for she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and here there is greater than Solomon. The people of Nineveh will rise up on Judgment Day with the people of these times and accuse them, for Jonah's preaching made them turn from their sins, and here is greater than Jonah."

REFLECTION
In the first reading Yahweh castigates his people Israel for their sins and transgressions against him.

In the Gospel reading, in similar fashion, Jesus castigates the people for their hardness of heart and unwillingness to see and to listen to his message. He reminds them that the Queen of the South traveled far to listen to Solomon and yet "here (today) there is greater than Solomon"; the people of Nineveh repented in sackcloth and ashes at the preaching of Jonah and yet "here (today) there is greater than Jonah."

As we begin the season of Lent let us take seriously the message of repentance for our sins: "0 my God, I am heartily sorry for having offended thee and I detest all my sins because I dread the loss of heaven and the pains of hell; but most of all because I have offended thee, my God, who are all good and deserving of all my love. I firmly resolve with the help of thy grace to confess my sins, to do penance and to amend my life. Amen."

WE PRAY FOR MTQ DAILY PRAYER INTENTIONS:
