THURSDAY 31ST WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME – YEAR II

NOVEMBER 4, 2010
MEMORIAL, ST CHARLES BORROMEO, BISHOP
THURSDAY 31ST WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME – YEAR II

PHILIPPIANS 3:3-8
We are the true people of the circumcision since we worship by the
Spirit of God and make Christ Jesus our only boast, not relying on
physical qualifications, although, I myself could rely on these too.
If anyone does claim to rely on them, my claim is better. Circumcised
on the eighth day of my life, I was born of the race of Israel, of the
tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew born of Hebrew parents. In the matter of
the Law, I was a Pharisee; as for religious fervour, I was a
persecutor of the Church; as for the uprightness embodied in the Law,
I was faultless. But what were once my assets I now through Christ
Jesus count as losses. Yes, I will go further: because of the supreme
advantage of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, I count everything else as
loss. For him I have accepted the loss of all other things, and look
on them all as filth if only I can gain Christ.

LUKE 15:1-10
The tax collectors and sinners, however, were all crowding round to
listen to him, and the Pharisees and scribes complained saying, 'This
man welcomes sinners and eats with them.' So he told them this
parable: 'Which one of you with a hundred sheep, if he lost one, would
fail to leave the ninety-nine in the desert and go after the missing
one till he found it? And when he found it, would he not joyfully take
it on his shoulders and then, when he got home, call together his
friends and neighbors, saying to them, "Rejoice with me, I have found
my sheep that was lost." In the same way, I tell you, there will be
more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner repenting than over ninety-
nine upright people who have no need of repentance. 'Or again, what
woman with ten drachmas would not, if she lost one, light a lamp and
sweep out the house and search thoroughly till she found it? And then,
when she had found it, call together her friends and neighbors, saying
to them, "Rejoice with me, I have found the drachma I lost." In the
same way, I tell you, there is rejoicing among the angels of God over
one repentant sinner.'

REFLECTION
The Pharisees and teachers of the law took great offense at Jesus
because he associated with tax collectors and sinners. Not only did he
associate with them and dine with them, he actually treated them
graciously. At a time when the Jews had strict and specific
regulations about how they were to keep away from people they
considered sinners, the Pharisees were shocked, to say the least, with
the way Jesus freely received them when they came to hear Him speak
about God.

In today's Gospel parable, Jesus teaches us that sinners must be
sought out, not merely mourned for. Just as the Shepherd grieves over
his lost sheep and rejoices once he is found, the Lord reminds us that
God does not rejoice in the loss of anyone, but desires that all be
saved and restored to fellowship with him. Do you pray for and seek
those you know who have drifted away from God? Do not judge people as
the Pharisees condemned the tax collectors, but instead be an
instrument of reconciliation between God and the lost.

WEDNESDAY 31ST WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME – YEAR II

NOVEMBER 3, 2010
MEMORIAL, ST MARTIN DE PORRES, RELIGIOUS
WEDNESDAY 31ST WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME – YEAR II

PHILIPPIANS 2:12-18
So, my dear friends, you have always been obedient; your obedience
must not be limited to times when I am present. Now that I am absent
it must be more in evidence, so work out your salvation in fear and
trembling. It is God who, for his own generous purpose, gives you the
intention and the powers to act. Let your behaviour be free of
murmuring and complaining so that you remain faultless and pure,
unspoilt children of God surrounded by a deceitful and underhand
brood, shining out among them like bright stars in the world,
proffering to it the Word of life. Then I shall have reason to be
proud on the Day of Christ, for it will not be for nothing that I have
run the race and toiled so hard. Indeed, even if my blood has to be
poured as a libation over your sacrifice and the offering of your
faith, then I shall be glad and join in your rejoicing- 18 and in the
same way, you must be glad and join in my rejoicing.

LUKE 14:25-33
Great crowds accompanied him on his way and he turned and spoke to
them. 'Anyone who comes to me without hating father, mother, wife,
children, brothers, sisters, yes and his own life too, cannot be my
disciple. No one who does not carry his cross and come after me can be
my disciple. 'And indeed, which of you here, intending to build a
tower, would not first sit down and work out the cost to see if he had
enough to complete it? Otherwise, if he laid the foundation and then
found himself unable to finish the work, anyone who saw it would start
making fun of him and saying, "Here is someone who started to build
and was unable to finish." Or again, what king marching to war against
another king would not first sit down and consider whether with ten
thousand men he could stand up to the other who was advancing against
him with twenty thousand? If not, then while the other king was still
a long way off, he would send envoys to sue for peace. So in the same
way, none of you can be my disciple without giving up all that he
owns.

REFLECTION
In the first reading, St. Paul says for us to work on our salvation
with fear and trembling for it God who is at work in you. We ask
ourselves why is this so?

Then we read in the gospel that we have to hate those we love. Not
only that but we have to hate our very own life as well. Is this
really what the Lord wants us to do?

For us Catholics, we have always been taught that our God is not to be
feared for He is Love. But the word today seems ironical. For those of
us who have experienced love from the Lord, we need to go deeper into
today's reading. Here the Lord talks about our attachments in life.
For how can we truly say we love God if we value someone more than
Him?

For example, a young man who has a calling to priesthood is compelled
by his parents not to go through with it. They see more their need to
have their son around than to fulfill God's mission for him.

We cannot do anything that is contrary to the standard of this world.
We need God's help. It is only by His grace that we can go beyond our
wants. Remember grace abounds on those who ask and desire the will of
God.
