THURSDAY, 9th Week in Ordinary Time

June 7, 2018 – THURSDAY, 9th Week in Ordinary Time

Green.

2 Tm 2: 8- 15 / Mk 12: 28- 34

FROM THE 1ST READING:             2 Tm 2: 8- 10

Remember Christ Jesus, risen from the dead, son of David, as preached in my Gospel. For this Gospel I labor and even wear chains like an evildoer, but the word of God is not chained. And so I bear everything for the sake of the chosen people, that they, too, may obtain the salvation given to us in Christ Jesus and share eternal glory.

GOSPEL READING:           Mk 12: 28- 34

A teacher of the Law had been listening to this discussion and admired how Jesus answered them. So he came up and asked him, "Which commandment is the first of all?"

Jesus answered, "The first is: Hear; Israel! The Lord, our God, is One Lord; and you shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind and with all your strength. And after this comes another one: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.. There is no commandment greater than these two."

The teacher of the Law said to him, "Well spoken, Master; you are right when you say that he is one and there is no other. To love him with all your heart, with all your understanding and with all your strength, and to love our neighbor as ourselves is more important than any burnt offering or sacrifice."

Jesus approved this answer and said, "You are not far from the kingdom of

God." But after that, no one dared to ask him any more questions.

REFLECTION

God's commandments are summarized in love of God and of our neighbor.

How do we show love of God "with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind and with all your strength"? We show our love of God by acknowledging and honoring him as our Creator and Father, by praying to him and asking him for our needs, by asking for his forgiveness when we have sinned against him, by thanking him for all his love and care for us. Yahweh God is a jealous God: him alone should we honor and worship as our God.

How do we show love of neighbor as ourselves? In the parallel passage in the Gospel of Luke, this episode is followed by another question from the teacher of the Law, "Who is my neighbor?" (Lk 10: 29)

Jesus answers him with the Parable of the Good Samaritan (Lk 10: 30-35): "Which of these three, do you think, made himself neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of robbers? The teacher of the Law answered, "The one who had mercy on him." And Jesus said, "Go then and do the same." (Lk 10: 36 - 37) Our neighbor is everyone, even people we do not know, even our enemies, but especially those in need.

Are we willing to say to others, "I love you, as Christ loves me"? What would that mean in my real life, with the real people I deal with?
