Sts. Andrew Kim Taegon, Priest, Paul Chong Ha-sang, Catechist, and Companions, Martyrs
Memorial, Red
1 Tm 3: 14 - 16 / Lk 7: 31 – 35
St. Andrew Kim Taegon (d. 1846), the first native Korean priest, Paul Chong Ha-sang, (1795 -1839), a lay Korean associate, and 111 Korean martyrs gave their lives for the Faith from 1839- 1867.
1st READING: 1 Tm 3: 14 - 16
I give you these instructions, although I hope I will see you soon. If I delay, you will know how you ought to conduct yourself in the household of God, that is, the Church of the living God, which is the pillar and foundation of the truth. How great indeed is the mystery of divine blessing!
Gospel Reading: Lk 7: 31 - 35
Jesus said, "What comparison can I use for this people? What are they like? They are like children sitting in the marketplace, about whom their companions complain: 'We piped you a tune and you would not dance; we sang funeral songs and you would not cry.'
"Remember John: he didn't eat bread or drink wine, and you said, 'He has an evil spirit.' Next came the Son of Man, eating and drinking, and you say: 'Look, a glutton for food and wine, a friend of tax collectors and sinners.' But the children of Wisdom always recognize her work."
REFLECTION
I once saw this post in Facebook, "I am drowning in information, yet am totally lacking in wisdom." This caused me to pause and reflect.
Indeed all day long we are bombarded with non-stop information and data, until we feel almost de-sensitized by it all. How do I behave and conduct myself in all this flow and confusion?
In the first reading Paul reminds Timothy and the other Church leaders to always conduct themselves properly, following instructions previously given to them.
In the Gospel reading Jesus compares the people to little children who would not dance to dance music nor cry with funeral songs: they could not understand John the Baptist who neither ate nor drank and yet they complained about Jesus for eating and drinking with tax collectors and sinners.
We need wisdom to properly understand and interpret the actions of people. John the Baptist led a life of penance and austerity: he was not possessed by an evil spirit. The Son of Man ate and drank with tax collectors and sinners: he was neither a glutton nor a drunkard; as missioned by the heavenly Father, he was seeking out sinners to save them from their sins.
Lord, give us the gift of wisdom to properly discern, interpret and understand the complex world and people around us.
