WEDNESDAY 26TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME – YEAR II

SEPTEMBER 29, 2010
FEAST, MICHAEL, GABRIEL AND RAPHAEL, ARCHANGELS
WEDNESDAY 26TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME – YEAR II

DANIEL 7:9-10, 13-14
While I was watching, thrones were set in place and one most venerable
took his seat. His robe was white as snow, the hair of his head as
pure as wool. His throne was a blaze of flames, its wheels were a
burning fire. A stream of fire poured out, issuing from his presence.
A thousand thousand waited on him, ten thousand times ten thousand
stood before him. The court was in session and the books lay open. I
was gazing into the visions of the night, when I saw, coming on the
clouds of heaven, as it were a son of man. He came to the One most
venerable and was led into his presence. On him was conferred rule,
honor and kingship, and all peoples, nations and languages became his
servants. His rule is an everlasting rule which will never pass away,
and his kingship will never come to an end.

JOHN 1:47-51
When Jesus saw Nathanael coming he said of him, 'There, truly, is an
Israelite in whom there is no deception.' Nathanael asked, 'How do you
know me?' Jesus replied, 'Before Philip came to call you, I saw you
under the fig tree.' Nathanael answered, 'Rabbi, you are the Son of
God, you are the king of Israel.' Jesus replied, 'You believe that
just because I said: I saw you under the fig tree. You are going to
see greater things than that.' And then he added, 'In all truth I tell
you, you will see heaven open and the angels of God ascending and
descending over the Son of man.'

REFLECTION
There have been lots of times that we have failed or disregarded God's
calling. We thought of it as just foolishness and our own imagination.
God speaks to us in many manners. We can come to know more about Him
from reading the Scriptures, or from listening to His teachings. He
can also talk to us by using other people. He even uses innocent
children to point out very relevant facts. In this manner, the impact
becomes doubly more meaningful.

Jesus sought out Nathanael while under the fig tree. He was called to
become an Apostle and a witness, Jesus saw an honest, true person in
him, "a person without guile". Can we live in this world free of lies?
For people who are, Jesus promised to let them have a glimpse of
heaven. That while here on earth, He encourages them to live out truly
Christian lives, for angels will open the gates of heaven for them.

Will you be a Nathanael?

MONDAY 26TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME – YEAR II

SEPTEMBER 27, 2010
MEMORIAL, ST. VINCENT DE PAUL, PRIEST
MONDAY 26TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME – YEAR II

JOB 1:6-22
One day when the sons of God came to attend on Yahweh, among them came
Satan. So Yahweh said to Satan, 'Where have you been?' 'Prowling about
on earth,' he answered, 'roaming around there.' So Yahweh asked him,
'Did you pay any attention to my servant Job? There is no one like him
on the earth: a sound and honest man who fears God and shuns evil.'
'Yes,' Satan said, 'but Job is not God-fearing for nothing, is he?
Have you not put a wall round him and his house and all his domain?
You have blessed all he undertakes, and his flocks throng the
countryside. But stretch out your hand and lay a finger on his
possessions: then, I warrant you, he will curse you to your face.'
'Very well,' Yahweh said to Satan, 'all he has is in your power. But
keep your hands off his person.' So Satan left the presence of Yahweh.
On the day when Job's sons and daughters were eating and drinking in
their eldest brother's house, a messenger came to Job. 'Your oxen', he
said, 'were at the plough, with the donkeys grazing at their side,
when the Sabaeans swept down on them and carried them off, and put the
servants to the sword: I alone have escaped to tell you.' He had not
finished speaking when another messenger arrived. 'The fire of God',
he said, 'has fallen from heaven and burnt the sheep and shepherds to
ashes: I alone have escaped to tell you.' He had not finished speaking
when another messenger arrived. 'The Chaldaeans,' he said, 'three
bands of them, have raided the camels and made off with them, and put
the servants to the sword: I alone have escaped to tell you.' He had
not finished speaking when another messenger arrived. 'Your sons and
daughters', he said, 'were eating and drinking at their eldest
brother's house, when suddenly from the desert a gale sprang up, and
it battered all four corners of the house which fell in on the young
people. They are dead: I alone have escaped to tell you.' Then Job
stood up, tore his robe and shaved his head. Then, falling to the
ground, he prostrated himself and said: Naked I came from my mother's
womb, naked I shall return again. Yahweh gave, Yahweh has taken back.
Blessed be the name of Yahweh! In all this misfortune Job committed no
sin, and he did not reproach God.

LUKE 9:46-50
An argument started between them about which of them was the greatest.
Jesus knew what thoughts were going through their minds, and he took a
little child whom he set by his side and then he said to them, 'Anyone
who welcomes this little child in my name welcomes me; and anyone who
welcomes me, welcomes the one who sent me. The least among you all is
the one who is the greatest.' John spoke up. 'Master,' he said, 'we
saw someone driving out devils in your name, and because he is not
with us we tried to stop him.' But Jesus said to him, 'You must not
stop him: anyone who is not against you is for you.'

REFLECTION
A while ago we heard Jesus say: "Whoever welcomes this little child on
my account welcomes me." Do we welcome the least of our brothers and
sisters even as we would welcome the greatest? St. James urges us in
the second chapter of his letter to welcome a poor man in shabby
clothes in the same way as we would welcome the influential and the
rich. He goes on to say: "Did not God choose those who are poor in the
eyes of the world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom that he
promised to those who love him? Yet you treated this poor man
shamefully."

St. Francis of Assisi welcomed all newcomers to his community in this
way. He had an implicit trust in what the Spirit of God was
accomplishing within those who were attracted to imitate his
lifestyle. Francis welcomed all as children of God so that he himself
might remain a child before God. We must have the heart of a child
before we can welcome all people as God's children.

The Imitation of Christ says that those who are evil within, see all
the world outside as evil. But those who are pure within, see all the
world outside as pure. It is often those who are the most sinful who
are the most skeptical, while those who are truly righteous, trust
others. St. Paul would say that there is no limit to love's trust. If
we do not trust people, it is often because we have not yet learned to
love.

Do we really trust what the Spirit is accomplishing, through our
brothers, and sisters? Do we really see the childlike followers of
Jesus as those who know God's wisdom, or are we still judging by the
standards of the world? Have we really nurtured a childlike purity
within ourselves? If we have, then we are learning about God's love.
