Rom 3: 21 - 30 / Lk 11: 47- 54

Sts. Isaac Jogues (1607- 1646), John de Brebeuf (1593 - 1649), priests, and their priest companions, Anthony Daniel (1601 - 1648), Gabriel Lallemant (1610 - 1649), Charles Garnier (1606 - 1649) and Noel Chabanel (1613 - 1649) and oblates Rene Goupil (1608- 1642) and Jean dela Lande (d. 1646), French Jesuit missionaries to North America, were tomahawked to death by the Iroquois.

Italian priest St. Paul of the Cross (1694 -1775), devoted to the service of the poor, the sick and his great penances, founded the Congregation of the Passion (Passionists) in 1741.

FROM THE FIRST READING:         Rom 3: 22- 26

God makes us righteous by means of faith in Jesus Christ, and this is applied to all who believe without distinction of persons. Because we have all sinned and all fall short of the Glory of God; and all are graciously forgiven and made righteous through the redemption effected in Christ Jesus.

For God has given him to be the victim whose blood obtains us forgiveness through faith. So God shows us how he makes us righteous. Past sins are forgiven which God overlooked till now. For now he wants to reveal his way of righteousness: how he is just and how he makes us righteous through faith in Jesus.

From the GOSPEL READING:        Lk 11: 47 - 48, 53

Jesus said, "A curse is on you, for you build memorials to the prophets your ancestors killed. So you approve and agree with what your ancestors did. Is it not so? They got rid of the prophets, and now you can build!" ...

"A curse is on you, teachers of the Law, for you have taken the key of knowledge. You yourselves have not entered, and you prevented others from entering."

REFLECTION

In the first reading St. Paul reminds us that we are all sinners, but, because of God's love and mercy and through the redeeming suffering and death of his Son Jesus Christ, God has forgiven us and made us righteous. Every time we approach God for forgiveness through the ministry of the Church in the sacrament of reconciliation, we cannot but be overwhelmed by his forgiving love and mercy which forgive us our offenses and make us righteous before him and the Church.

If God is so forgiving to me, can I do less to those who have wronged me? Pope Francis has said, "If I cannot forgive, I cannot ask for forgiveness. Jesus teaches us to pray like this to the Father: 'Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us."'

In the Gospel reading we hear very strong condemnation of our Lord for the religious leaders of the Jews for their hypocrisy and lack of care and concern for those committed to their care and leadership.
