Our Lady of Mount Carmel
16 July 2016
Saturday, 16th Week in Ordinary Time
Our Lady of Mount Carmel
Green.
Mi 2:1 – 5 / Mt 12:14 – 21
In 1251 the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to St. Simon Stock (1165 – 1265), Superior-General of the Carmelite Order, with promises for those who wore her scapular.
From the 1st Reading: Mic 2:3
This is why Yahweh speaks, "I am plotting evil against this whole brood, from which your necks cannot escape. No more shall you walk with head held high for it will be an evil time.
Gospel Reading: Mt 12:14 – 21
Then the Pharisees went out and made plans to get rid of him. As Jesus was aware of the plot, he went away from that place. Many people followed him and he cured all who were sick. Then he gave them strict orders not to make him known.
In this way Isaiah's prophecy was fulfilled: Here is my servant whom I have chosen, the one I love, and with whom I am pleased. I will put my Spirit upon him and he will announce my judgment to the nations. He will not argue or shout, nor will his voice be heard in the streets. The bruised reed he will not crush, nor snuff out the smoldering wick. He will persist until justice is made victorious and in him all the nations will put their hope."
Reflection
God is Love, and He does not want us to suffer in our lives. But sometimes, life may seem unfair. At one time or another, we have complained against God.
Like in the first reading, we may have asked God, "Why am I sick? Why did my parents separate? Why did I lose my job? Is it really God's will that I should suffer this much?" We have all asked some of these questions at one time or another. And many of these times, it seemed as though God did not answer us.
Let us remember that our lives are a result of God's plan and man's free will. God does not want us to get hurt, but He gives us the freedom to make mistakes. Sometimes, our sufferings are brought about by our own decisions. Sometimes, we suffer because of others' actions towards us.
The good news is that God can make something beautiful out of our mistakes, out of our sins, out of our miseries. He will not crush us and make us feel worthless. Instead He will help us to recover from our mistakes and reform our lives. Our God is a merciful and compassionate God.
Today, let us ask Him to give us the same spirit of meekness and humility that Jesus had, so that we can share in the mission of making people understand His love.
