SATURDAY, 27th Week in Ordinary Time

October 10, 2015 SATURDAY, 27th Week in Ordinary Time

Jl 4:12-21 / Lk 11:27-28

Reading: Jl 4:12-21

Yahweh says, "Yet even now, return to me with your whole heart, with fasting, weeping and mourning. Rend your heart, not your garment. Return to Yahweh, your God – gracious and compassionate."

Yahweh is slow to anger, full of kindness, and he repents of having punished.

Who knows? Probably he will relent once more and spare some part of the harvest from which we may bring sacred offerings to Yahweh, your God.

Blow the trumpet in Zion, proclaim a sacred fast, call a solemn assembly.

Gather the people, sanctify the community, bring together the elders, even the children and infants at the breast. Let the bridegroom leave his bed, and the bride her room.

Between the vestibule and the altar, let the priests, Yahweh's ministers, weep and say: Spare your people, Yahweh. Do not humble them or make them an object of scorn among the nations. Why should it be said among the peoples: Where is their God?

Yahweh has become jealous for his land; he has had pity on his people. Yahweh has given an answer; he says to them, "I am sending you grain, new wine and oil which will fully satisfy you; never again will you be scorned by the nations.

I will drive far from you the enemy from the North and pursue him towards a land of drought and desolation: his vanguard to the Eastern Sea, his rearguard to the Western Sea. Its stench will rise everywhere. See that I do great things."

Fear not, O earth! exult and rejoice for Yahweh has acted magnificently!

Gospel: Lk 11:27-28

As Jesus was saying these things, a woman on the crowd called out, "Blessed is the mother who gave you birth and nursed you." He replied, "Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and obey it."

Reflection:

     Three insights come to mind:

     1) True Blessedness. Jesus handpicked all the mothers in the audience and began addressing them. And he called them blessed. He must have been thinking of his own mother and set her as the embodiment of true blessedness. Mothers are blessed as they have the capacity to put together these directions from Jesus: "Keep, listen, put into practice and ponder the Word of God."

     2) True Call. I am a mother and I believe that a mother's mission first and foremost is to be able to listen to her children – to pay heed, keep an attentive ear and to be quiet and ponder on every possible moment of grace. And this is the call - this is the challenge of Jesus. He gives us his mother to be our model of true discipleship and witnessing to the wonderful Word of God.  He instructs us to have a relationship with God the way Mary relates with her Son – she Listens, Beholds and Ponders on her son and every word that comes out of his mouth.  And she takes pleasure in his every word.

     3)  True Hope.  The creative function of listening, the way Mary does, brings forth life. Her Son's word is like a seed and Mary cultivates it, lets it take root and makes it grow. She prepares the soil and plants the Word in her heart.  She lets the Word remain in her heart and from there springs forth new life and new hope.

Truly, today's Gospel has so much Good News for all of us.  We are grateful for we are blessed. We are inspired for we are called. And we are expectant for Jesus promised us a life of eternal happiness with Him. We have a heart of a mother, His Mother, as ours is fashioned after Mary's.
