THURSDAY, 14th Week in Ordinary Time

July 12, 2018 – THURSDAY, 14th Week in Ordinary Time

Sts. Louis Martin and Marie Zelle Guerin, Parents of St. Therese of the Child Jesus Green.

Hos 11: 1 - 4, Be - 9 / Mt 10: 7- 15

Sts. Louis Martin (1823 - 1894) and Marie Zelle Guerin (1831 - 1877), parents of St. Theres of the Child Jesus (1873 - 1897), were beatified at the cathedral of Lisieux on 19 October 2008 and canonized in Rome on 18 October 2015 by Pope Francis as models of the mystery of the vocation of married life. They had nine children.

FROM THE 1ST READING:             Hos 11: 1 - 4

I loved Israel when he was a child; out of Egypt I called my son. But the more I called, the further have they gone from me - sacrificing to the Baals, burning incense to the idols.

Yet it was I who taught Ephraim to walk, taking them by the arms; yet little did they realize that I cared for them. I led them with cords of human kindness, with leading strings of love, and I became for them one who eases the yoke upon their neck and stoops down to feed them.

FROM THE GOSPEL READING:     Mt 10: 7- 13

Jesus said to the Twelve, "Go and proclaim this message: The kingdom of God is near. Heal the sick, bring the dead back to life, cleanse the lepers, and drive out demons. You received this as a gift, so give it as a gift. Do not carry any gold, silver or copper in your purses, Do not carry a traveler's bag, or an extra shirt, or sandals, or walking stick: workers deserve their living.

"When you come to a town or a village, look for a worthy person and stay there until you leave. As you enter the house, wish it peace. If the people in the house deserve it, your peace will be on them; if they do not deserve it, your blessing will come back to you."

REFLECTION

In the first reading the prophet Hosea speaks of God's love for Israel despite Israel's infidelities.

In today's Gospel reading Jesus sends off the Twelve on mission without expecting any return; he gives them the gift of healing, of raising the dead back to life, of cleansing lepers and driving out demons. He tells them to proclaim the coming of God's kingdom.

While we have not been given the same miraculous powers to share with others, we too are missioned to preach the Good News and to do what we can to make people happier and more peaceful and the world brighter and more loving.

Jesus tells the Twelve not to bring gold or an extra shirt but to trust in other people. He reminds us to travel light and to be aware of what is really important in our life's journey. He tells us to trust in the goodness of people and to believe in the benevolence of God's creation.

Are we ready to return God's love for us by loving others?
