FEAST, STS. SIMON AND JUDE, APOSTLES

OCTOBER 28, 2010
FEAST, STS. SIMON AND JUDE, APOSTLES
THURSDAY 30TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME – YEAR II

EPHESIANS 2:19-22
So you are no longer aliens or foreign visitors; you are fellow-
citizens with the holy people of God and part of God's household. You
are built upon the foundations of the apostles and prophets, and
Christ Jesus himself is the cornerstone. Every structure knit together
in him grows into a holy temple in the Lord; and you too, in him, are
being built up into a dwelling-place of God in the Spirit.

LUKE 6:12-16
Now it happened in those days that he went onto the mountain to pray;
and he spent the whole night in prayer to God. When day came he
summoned his disciples and picked out twelve of them; he called them
'apostles': Simon whom he called Peter, and his brother Andrew, James,
John, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, James son of Alphaeus,
Simon called the Zealot, Judas son of James, and Judas Iscariot who
became a traitor.

REFLECTION
Jesus chose twelve very ordinary men to be his first disciples. They
were nonprofessionals, who had neither wealth nor position in their
community. He selected them from among common people who had no
special education, and no social advantages. Simply put, Jesus picked
ordinary men who could take an assignment and do it extraordinarily
well. He chose the twelve, not based on their accomplishments, but for
what he believed they were capable of becoming under his direction and
power. Peter for example, was a humble fisherman who became a leader
of the early Church and subsequently the first Bishop of Rome.

In the same way, when the Lord calls on us to serve him, we should
never hesitate simply because we think that we have little or nothing
to offer. It is ordinary people like us, who the Lord needs to help
build his Kingdom. What is God's call in your life?
