WEDNESDAY, 17th Week in Ordinary Time

August 2, 2017 – WEDNESDAY, 17th Week in Ordinary Time

St. Peter Faber, Priest

St. Eusebius of Vercelli, Bishop

St. Peter Julian Eymard, Priest and Religious Founder Memorial, White

Ex 34:29-35 / Mt 13:44 - 46

Savoyard St. Peter Faber (1506 - 1546), ordained a priest in 1534, was the first priest of the Society of Jesus. He was among its founding members (1540). At the Pope's bidding he preached all over Europe. Beatified by Pope Pius IX in

1872, he was canonized by Pope Francis on 17 December 2013.

St.Eusebius of Vercelli (283? - 371), from Sardinia, was the first Bishop of

Vercelli in northern Italy; he defended the divinity of Christ against the Arians.

Frenchman St. Peter Julian Eymard (1811 - 1868), greatly devoted to the

Eucharist, founded the Congregation of the Blessed Sacrament.

FROM THE FIRST READING:         Ex 34: 29- 30

When Moses came down from Mount Sinai, with the two slabs of the Statement in his hands, he was not aware that the skin of his face was radiant after speaking with Yahweh.

Aaron and all the sons of Israel saw that Moses' face was radiant and they were afraid to go near him.

GOSPEL READING:           Mt 13: 44- 46

Jesus said, "The kingdom of heaven is like a treasure hidden in a field. The one who finds it buries it again; and so happy is he that he goes and sells everything he has in order to buy that field.

"Again the kingdom of heaven is like a trader who is looking for fine pearls. Once he found a pearl of exceptional quality, he goes away, sells everything he has and buys it."

REFLECTION

In two brief parables Jesus tries to tell people what the kingdom of heaven is about: like one who finds a hidden treasure in the field and sells all he owns to be able to purchase the field and like a trader who finds a truly exceptional pearl and sells all he owns to purchase the pearl.

The kingdom of heaven is so valuable we should be willing to sell all we own to get to the kingdom of heaven.

Various things may hinder our pursuit of the kingdom of heaven: our own human limitations and weaknesses, our lack of faith, our focus on things of this earth rather than of things which persist beyond this earth and the guiles of the evil one.

Whatever the hindrances may be, we do need a personal relationship with Jesus who has told us about the kingdom of heaven and who has led the way for us to enjoy the kingdom of heaven.

Jesus has also promised us that the Father would send the Helper, the Spirit of Truth, to help and guide us do what he has taught us.

May we never go astray in our pursuit of God and the kingdom of heaven.
