THURSDAY 30TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME – YEAR I

OCTOBER 27, 2011
THURSDAY 30TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME – YEAR I

Rom 8:31-39 / Ps 109:21-22, 26-27, 30-31 / Lk 13:31-35

ROMANS 8:31-39
What shall we say after this? If God is with us, who shall be against
us? If he did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all, how
will he not give us all things with him? Who shall accuse those chosen
by God: he takes away their guilt. Who will dare to condemn them?
Christ who died, and better still, rose and is seated at the right
hand of God, interceding for us? Who shall separate us from the love
of Christ? Will it be trials, or anguish, persecution or hunger, lack
of clothing, or dangers or sword? As the Scripture says: For your sake
we are being killed all day long; they treat us like sheep to be
slaughtered. No, in all of this we are more than conquerors, thanks to
him who has loved us. I am certain that neither death nor life,
neither angels nor spiritual powers, neither the present nor the
future, nor cosmic powers, were they from heaven or from the deep
world below, nor any creature whatsoever will separate us from the
love of God, which we have in Jesus Christ, our Lord.

LUKE 13:31-35
Some Pharisees came to Jesus and gave him this warning, "Leave this
place and go on your way, for Herod wants to kill you." Jesus said to
them, "Go and give that fox my answer: `I drive out demons and heal
today and tomorrow, and on the third day I finish my course!'
Nevertheless, I must go on my way today and tomorrow and for a little
longer, for it would not be fit ting for a prophet to be killed
outside Jerusalem. "O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you slay the prophets and
stone your apostles! How often have I tried to bring together your
children, as a bird gathers her young under her wings, but you
refused! From now on you will be left with your temple and you will no
longer see me until the time when you will say: Blessed is he who
comes in the name of the Lord."

REFLECTION
After the massive flooding caused by Typhoon Ondoy in 2009, we heard
many stories of how lives were saved not only by the professional
rescuers but even by ordinary people who put their own lives in
danger. One that struck me so much was that of my sister who was so
very brave as to wade and walk 12 kilometers in the breast-deep
flowing water just to buy medicine for her hospitalized son. She did
not do it just once but twice. The great love for her son moved her to
risk her own life just to be able to buy the medicine that could
prolong her son's life. Many mothers sacrifice in different ways to
show their love for their children.

In today's Gospel, Jesus uses the symbol of a mother hen gathering her
chicks under her wings in order to protect them. Jesus used the symbol
to teach the Pharisees about a loving Father who protects and takes
care of His children.

St. Paul says that nothing can separate us from the love of Christ,
not even trials, anguish, persecution or anger. In short, with this
love, we can overcome everything. Neither death nor life – neither
angels nor spiritual powers – nothing and no one can separate us from
the love of God which we have in Jesus Christ, our Lord. Yes, the
Father's love given to us through Jesus will sustain our life and will
protect us from all harm just like the mother's love for her children.

Let us ask ourselves today: Are we aware of things or persons who try
to separate us from the love of God? What are we doing about it? Do we
allow the love of God to fill our hearts and let ourselves be loved by
Him? Are we ready to also share this love with people around us?

WEDNESDAY 30TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME – YEAR I

OCTOBER 26, 2011
WEDNESDAY 30TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME – YEAR I

Rom 8:26-30 / Ps 13:4-5, 6 / Lk 13:22-30

ROMANS 8:26-30
We are weak, but the Spirit comes to help us. How to ask? And what
shall we ask for? We do not know, but the spirit intercedes for us
without words, as if with groans. And He who sees inner secrets knows
the desires of the Spirit, for he asks for the holy ones what is
pleasing to God. We know that in everything God works for the good of
those who love him, whom he has called according to his plan. Those
whom he knew beforehand, he has also predestined to be like his Son,
similar to him, so that he may be the Firstborn among many brothers
and sisters. And so, those whom God predestined he called, and those
whom he called he makes righteous, and to those whom he makes
righteous he will give his Glory.

LUKE 13:22-30
Jesus went through towns and villages teaching and making his way to
Jerusalem. Someone asked him, "Lord, is it true that few people will
be saved?" And Jesus answered, "Do your best to enter by the narrow
door, for many, I tell you, will try to enter and will not be able.
When once the master of the house has got up and locked the door, you
will stand outside; then you will knock at the door calling: `Lord,
open to us.' But he will say to you: `I do not know where you come
from.' Then you will say: We ate and drank with you and you taught in
our streets! But he will reply: `I don't know where you come from.
Away from me all you workers of evil.' You will weep and grind your
teeth when you see Abraham and Jacob and all the prophets in the
kingdom of God, and you yourselves left outside. Others will sit at
table in the kingdom of God, people coming from east and west, from
nor th and south. Some who are among the last will be the first, and
others who were first will be last!"

REFLECTION
Jesus advises us to come in through the narrow gate. This means
pulling ourselves together. We cannot enter through the narrow gate if
we are laden down with many burdens and carry many objects. The image
of the narrow gate calls us to a true sense of reform and change of
heart. We cannot hold on to Jesus and the things of this world at the
same time. We know that our spiritual journey always includes get ting
rid of the things that we don't need, especially things that are not
good for us and distract us and weigh us down. The narrow gate reminds
us of purity of heart. It tells us that we cannot serve two masters.
We cannot belong to Jesus and at the same time be slaves to the things
that we possess.

It is not always easy in our world to be Jesus' faithful followers.
Temptations abound. We are bombarded by the media telling us what
makes us happy, how to succeed in life, and how to attain a place of
prominence or fame. The key to attaining life with God is how we live
our lives.

Are we in tune with God and his ways? Do we open our hearts each day
to hear and live the message that God sent us through his Son, Jesus
Christ? Our hearts need to be constantly converted to follow his ways.
Our Christianity calls each of us to establish a very close and
personal relationship with Jesus. This is the narrow gate that the
Gospel talks about.
