MONDAY OF EASTER OCTAVE

APRIL 5, 2010
MONDAY OF EASTER OCTAVE

ACTS 2:14, 22-32
Then Peter stood up with the Eleven and addressed them in a loud
voice: 'Men of Judaea, and all you who live in Jerusalem, make no
mistake about this, but listen carefully to what I say. 'Men of
Israel, listen to what I am going to say: Jesus the Nazarene was a man
commended to you by God by the miracles and portents and signs that
God worked through him when he was among you, as you know. This man,
who was put into your power by the deliberate intention and
foreknowledge of God, you took and had crucified and killed by men
outside the Law. But God raised him to life, freeing him from the
pangs of Hades; for it was impossible for him to be held in its power
since, as David says of him: I kept the Lord before my sight always,
for with him at my right hand nothing can shake me. So my heart
rejoiced my tongue delighted; my body, too, will rest secure, for you
will not abandon me to Hades or allow your holy one to see corruption.
You have taught me the way of life, you will fill me with joy in your
presence. 'Brothers, no one can deny that the patriarch David himself
is dead and buried: his tomb is still with us. But since he was a
prophet, and knew that God had sworn him an oath to make one of his
descendants succeed him on the throne, he spoke with foreknowledge
about the resurrection of the Christ: he is the one who was not
abandoned to Hades, and whose body did not see corruption. God raised
this man Jesus to life, and of that we are all witnesses.

MATTHEW 28:8-15
Filled with awe and great joy the women came quickly away from the
tomb and ran to tell his disciples. And suddenly, coming to meet them,
was Jesus. 'Greetings,' he said. And the women came up to him and,
clasping his feet, they did him homage. Then Jesus said to them, 'Do
not be afraid; go and tell my brothers that they must leave for
Galilee; there they will see me.' Now while they were on their way,
some of the guards went off into the city to tell the chief priests
all that had happened. These held a meeting with the elders and, after
some discussion, handed a considerable sum of money to the soldiers
with these instructions, 'This is what you must say, "His disciples
came during the night and stole him away while we were asleep." And
should the governor come to hear of this, we undertake to put things
right with him ourselves and to see that you do not get into trouble.'
So they took the money and carried out their instructions, and to this
day that is the story among the Jews.

REFLECTION
To bear witness is to attest and affirm the reality of an event which
circumstances require. It is to avoid error or ill-will and in law
condemnation is not possible without the evidence of witness. Yet
false witnesses still exist, as also in the trial of Christ. The first
reading we see Peter giving witness to Christ's resurrection. This is
not a juridical witnessing but takes on a distinct religious value
because this is a testimony of faith. It is not only limited by sight
but it is a testimony of the Spirit. The internal guarantee that
Christ really is the Word of Life made flesh. The experience of the
resurrection lives in the hearts of the first apostles and they were
not afraid to bear witness before authorities and tribunals. This
guarantee created many martyrs because nothing can extinguish the
experience of Christ's resurrection in their hearts, not even
persecution or death. We are also called to be witnesses of Christ
because Christian life does not make us isolated individuals but
individuals for the others. Martyrdom is to be witness to our faith by
the testimony of blood but it can also be done by sacrificing your
time through acts of charity, evangelization, forgiving as Christ and
many similar works.

EASTER SUNDAY - C

APRIL 4, 2010
EASTER SUNDAY - C

ACTS 10:34, 37-43
Then Peter addressed them, 'I now really understand', he said, 'that
God has no favorites, You know what happened all over Judaea, how
Jesus of Nazareth began in Galilee, after John had been preaching
baptism. God had anointed him with the Holy Spirit and with power, and
because God was with him, Jesus went about doing good and curing all
who had fallen into the power of the devil. Now we are witnesses to
everything he did throughout the countryside of Judaea and in
Jerusalem itself: and they killed him by hanging him on a tree, yet on
the third day God raised him to life and allowed him to be seen, not
by the whole people but only by certain witnesses that God had chosen
beforehand. Now we are those witnesses -- we have eaten and drunk with
him after his resurrection from the dead- and he has ordered us to
proclaim this to his people and to bear witness that God has appointed
him to judge everyone, alive or dead. It is to him that all the
prophets bear this witness: that all who believe in Jesus will have
their sins forgiven through his name.'

COLOSSIANS 3:1-4
Since you have been raised up to be with Christ, you must look for the
things that are above, where Christ is, sitting at God's right hand.
Let your thoughts be on things above, not on the things that are on
the earth, because you have died, and now the life you have is hidden
with Christ in God. But when Christ is revealed -- and he is your life-
you, too, will be revealed with him in glory.

JOHN 20:1-9
It was very early on the first day of the week and still dark, when
Mary of Magdala came to the tomb. She saw that the stone had been
moved away from the tomb and came running to Simon Peter and the other
disciple, the one whom Jesus loved. 'They have taken the Lord out of
the tomb,' she said, 'and we don't know where they have put him.' So
Peter set out with the other disciple to go to the tomb. They ran
together, but the other disciple, running faster than Peter, reached
the tomb first; he bent down and saw the linen cloths lying on the
ground, but did not go in. Simon Peter, following him, also came up,
went into the tomb, saw the linen cloths lying on the ground and also
the cloth that had been over his head; this was not with the linen
cloths but rolled up in a place by itself. Then the other disciple who
had reached the tomb first also went in; he saw and he believed. Till
this moment they had still not understood the scripture, that he must
rise from the dead.

REFLECTION
The resurrection of Jesus was surely a big surprise for his friends.
What was a further surprise was that a woman in the person of Mary
Magdalene was one of the first to know and in fact, in the account of
John, was the one responsible in informing Peter and the other
disciple of the peculiar happenings in the tomb of Jesus.

It has to be remembered that Jewish society is essentially
patriarchal. In this regard, a testimony of a woman in Jesus' time was
not readily accepted. This is seen by the response of Peter and the
other disciple who had to see for themselves whether the testimony
given by Mary was indeed true.

Yet, the message that Jesus is trying to get across is the underlying
truth that his mission is for everyone. After all, in his life, he
tried as much as possible not to make himself exclusive as evidenced
in the many times that he seemed to be breaking rules and traditions
which were seen to be an affront. Rather, the more important message
is the salvation that he was offering freely to anyone ready to
accept. And so, it is not surprising that he seemed to have made some
preferential option to those who were considered outcasts in society.
He healed the lepers. He had table fellowships with the sinners
especially tax collectors who were so despised in Jewish society for
their gross abuses of power that led them to become wealthy.

In this Resurrection scene, importance then is somehow given to the
testimony of a woman who has been a disciple since she experienced
conversion from Jesus.
