PENTECOST SUNDAY – C

MAY 19, 2013
PENTECOST SUNDAY – C

Acts 2:1-11 / Ps 104: 1. 24. 29-30. 31. 34 / Rom 8:8-17 / Jn 14:15-26

Acts 2:1-11
When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. And suddenly out of the sky came a sound like a strong rushing wind and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. There appeared tongues as if of fire which parted and came to rest upon each one of them. All were filled with Holy Spirit and began to speak other languages, as the Spirit enabled them to speak. Staying in Jerusalem were religious Jews from every nation under heaven. When they heard this sound, a crowd gathered, all excited because each heard them speaking in his own language. Full of amazement and wonder, they asked, "Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? How is it that we hear them in our own native language? Here are Parthians, Medes and Elamites and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia, Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and foreigners who accept Jewish beliefs, Cretians and Arabians; and all of us hear them proclaiming in our own language what God, the Savior, does."

Romans 8:8-17
So, those walking according to the flesh cannot please God. Yet your existence is not in the flesh, but in the spirit, because the Spir it of God is within you. If you did not have the Spirit of Christ, you would not belong to him. But Christ is within you; though the body is branded by death as a consequence of sin, the spirit is life and holiness. And if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead is within you, He who raised Jesus Christ from among the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies. Yes, he will do it through his Spirit who dwells within you. Then, brothers, let us leave the flesh and no longer live according to it. If not, we will die. Rather, walking in the Spirit, let us put to death the body's deeds so that we may live. All those who walk in the Spirit of God are sons and daughters of God. Then, no more fear: you did not receive a spirit of slavery, but the Spirit that makes you sons and daughters and every time we cry, "Abba! (this is Dad!) Father!" the Spirit assures our spirit that we are sons and daughters of God. If we are children, we are heirs, too. Ours will be the inheritance of God and we will share it with Christ; for if we now suffer with him, we will also share Glory with him.

John 14:15-26
If you love me, you will keep my commandments; and I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper to be with you forever, that Spirit of truth whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he is with you and will be in you. I will not leave you orphans, I am coming to you. A little while and the world will see me no more, but you will see me, because I live and you will also live. On that day you will know that I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you. Whoever keeps my commandments is the one who loves me. If he loves me, he will also be loved by my Father; I too shall love him and show myself clearly to him." Judas—not Judas Iscariot— asked Jesus, "Lord, how can it be that you will show yourself clearly to us and not to the world?" Jesus answered him, "If anyone loves me, he will keep my word and my Father will love him; and we will come to him and make a room in his home. But if anyone does not love me, he will not keep my words; and these words that you hear are not mine, but the Father's who sent me. I told you all this while I was still with you. From now on the Helper, the Holy Spirit whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things, and remind you of all that I have told you.

REFLECTION
We celebrate today the feast of Pentecost, a very special day when we commemorate the birth of the Church. When our Lord sent and gave the Holy Spirit to his disciples, they had two important experiences: first, a much deeper relationship with our Lord Jesus, and second, a greater sense of unity with the community of believers. In our gospel reading, our Lord Jesus told his disciples that the Holy Spirit would teach them all things and help them to remember all that he had told them. In our first reading, the Holy Spirit enabled the disciples to speak in many different languages so that all people who heard them understood what they were saying.

In baptism all of us also received the gifts of the Holy Spirit making us children of God our Father. In confirmation, we received the gifts of the Holy Spirit to make us active members of our Christian community. How do we experience the Holy Spirit being truly present in our lives?

Our responsorial psalm echoes a prayer that says: "Lord, send out your Spirit and renew the face of the earth." When the Holy Spirit is very much alive in us and in the world, there is renewal and rebirth. Let us therefore reflect on our lives and allow the Holy Spirit to renew our relationship with God and with one another in the community of the Church.

SATURDAY 7TH WEEK OF EASTER – YR I

MAY 18, 2013
MEMORIAL, SAINT JOHN I, POPE AND MARTYR
SATURDAY 7TH WEEK OF EASTER – YR I

Acts 28:16-20,30-31 / Ps 11: 4. 5 and 7 / Jn 21:20-25

Acts 28:16-20,30-31
Upon our arrival in Rome, the captain turned the prisoners over to the military governor but permitted Paul to lodge in a private house with the soldier who guarded him. After three days, Paul called together the leaders of the Jews. When they had gathered, he said to them: "Brothers, though I have not done anything against our people or against the traditions of our fathers, I was arrested in Jerusalem and handed over to the Romans. They examined me and wanted to set me free, for they saw nothing in my case that deserved death. But the Jews objected, so I was forced to appeal to Caesar without the least intention of bringing any case against my own people. Therefore, I have asked to see you and speak with you, since it is because of the hope of Israel that I bear these chains."

John 21:20-25
Peter looked back and saw that the disciple Jesus loved was following as well, the one who had reclined close to Jesus at the supper, and had asked him, "Lord, who is to betray you?" On seeing him, Peter asked Jesus, "Lord, what about him?" Jesus answered, "If I want him to remain until I come, does that concern you? Follow me!" Because of this the rumor spread in the community that this disciple would not die. Yet Jesus had not said to Peter, "He will not die," but, "Suppose I want him to remain until I come." It is this disciple who testifies about the things he has written here, and we know that his testimony is true. But Jesus did many other things; if all were written down, I think the world itself could not contain the books that should be written.

REFLECTION
When Paul was imprisoned in Rome, he was allowed to live by himself with a soldier guarding him. On the third day, he called together the leaders of the Jews and explained his situation, and he used this opportunity to preach to them and to witness to our Lord Jesus Christ.

It has been said that nothing happens by coincidence or by chance. In other words, every person who comes into our life, and every event that happens in our life has a purpose. It serves as stimulus for us to react with a feeling, a direction, and a verbal or mental yes or no to take some action.

Paul, being misunderstood or misjudged or mistreated, could have reacted with anger, with hopelessness or simply retreated from his mission in life which was to proclaim God's word. However, with his long lasting faith and hope in Jesus, he accepted his unjust imprisonment in Rome, and used it pro-actively by taking the initiative to speak to the Jews and share his mission with them. .

Our good Lord only asks us to speak and act for him if we truly love him. We pray for the Holy Spirit to enlighten our audience or people with whom we share God's Word. But ultimately, what counts is how we live our life, how we use our time to witness to God's goodness and love.
