32ND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME – A

NOVEMBER 6, 2011
32ND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME – A

Wis 6:12-16 / Ps 63:2, 3-4, 5-6, 7-8 / 1 Thes 4:13-17 or 4:13-14 / Mt
25:1-13

WISDOM 6:12-16
Wisdom is luminous and never tarnished; she willingly lets herself be
seen by those who love her, and known by those who look for her. She
hastens to meet those who long for her. Seek her in the morning and
you will not be disappointed; you will find her sit ting at your door.
To meditate on Wisdom is understanding fully grown; whoever is on the
watch for her will be free of anxiety. She goes in search of those who
are worthy of her, graciously meets them on the way and is present in
their every thought.

1 THESSALONIANS 4:13–18
Brothers and sisters, we want you not to be mistaken about those who
are already asleep, lest you grieve as do those who have no hope. We
believe that Jesus died and rose; it will be the same for those who
have died in Jesus. God will bring them together with Jesus and for
his sake. By the same word of the Lord we assert this: those of us who
are to be alive at the Lord's coming will not go ahead of those who
are already asleep. When the command by the archangel's voice is
given, the Lord himself will come down from heaven, while the divine
trumpet call is sounding. Then those who have died in the Lord will
rise first; as for us who are still alive, we will be brought along
with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the celestial world. And
we will be with the Lord forever. So, then comfort one another with
these words.

MATTHEW 25:1-13
Jesus said to his disciples, "This story throws light on what will
happen in the kingdom of heaven: Ten bridesmaids went out with their
lamps to meet the bridegroom. Five of them were careless, and the
others were sensible. The careless bridesmaids took their lamps as
they were, and did not bring extra oil. But those who were sensible,
brought with their lamps flasks of oil. As the bridegroom delayed,
they all grew drowsy and fell asleep. "But at midnight, a cry rang
out, `The bridegroom is here, come out and meet him!' All the maidens
woke up at once, and trimmed their lamps. Then the careless ones said
to the sensible ones, `Give us some oil, for our lamps are going out.'
The sensible ones answered, `There may not be enough for us and for
you. You had better go to those who sell, and buy some for
yourselves.' "They were out buying oil when the bridegroom came, and
those who were ready went with him to the wedding feast, and the doors
were shut. "Later the other bridesmaids arrived and called out, `Lord,
Lord, open to us!' But he answered, `Truly I do not know you.' So stay
awake, for you do not know the day nor the hour."

REFLECTION
The liturgical calendar is about to end and so, it is not surprising
that the theme focuses on the end of the world. In this regard, Jesus
explicitly reminds us to remain alert. Be on guard for we do not know
the hour of the end of the world. He then uses the parable of the "ten
wise and foolish virgins." The fate of the foolish virgins is sad for
the Lord does not recognize and acknowledge them. They were unprepared
and so, they missed the coming of the Lord.

The message then is so simple and straight forward, that is, "Be
ready." This echoes the motto of the boy scout.

It is appalling to hear some people predict the end of the world. One
gets to wonder as to what their basis for such forecast is. Are great
catastrophes like flooding, earthquakes, and great suffering
indications that this beautiful world will now come to its end
considering that new life continues as evidenced in births of living
things? One simply has to recall what Jesus says in Scriptures, that
is, no one knows the end of the world except his Father. In view of
this mystery, all that we can do is to prepare ourselves with this
eventuality.

One way to prepare for the end is to straighten out certain aspects in
our lives. In particular, we can try to minimize our unfinished
businesses. This may mean reconciliation with a loved one. Or, we can
be more expressive in telling people how much we love them. How about
our ambitions and dreams in life? What then are the "what ifs" that
can still be achieved?

Some may not agree but there is surely some blessing for those who are
sick in that they can somehow "fix" their lives knowing well that
death is imminent unlike that of a sudden and unusual death especially
if the person is young and promising.

Death is inevitable and it becomes important then that we are prepared
for something that we will have to eventually face. In the meantime,
our preparation may become meaningful when we do things that are
pleasing to God. Anytime then that our time is up, there shall
hopefully be minimal regrets.

SATURDAY 31ST WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME – YEAR I

NOVEMBER 5, 2011
MEMORIAL ALL SAINTS & BLESSED OF THE SOCIETY OF JESUS
SATURDAY 31ST WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME – YEAR I

ROMANS 16:3-9, 16, 22-27
Brothers and sisters: Greetings to Prisca and Aquilas, my helpers in
Christ Jesus. To save my life, they risked theirs; I am very grateful
to them, as are all the churches of the pagan nations. Greetings also
to the church that meets in their house. Greetings to my dear
Epaenetus, the first in the province of Asia to believe in Christ.
Greet Mary, who worked so much for you. Greetings to Andronicus and
Junias, my relatives and companions in prison; they are well known
apostles and served Christ before I did. Give greetings to Ampliatus,
whom I love so much in the Lord. Greetings to Urbanus, our fellow
worker, and to my dear Stachys. Greetings to Apelles, who suffered for
Christ, and the family of Aristobulus.

LUKE 16:9-15
Jesus said to his disciples, "And so I tell you: use filthy money to
make friends for yourselves, so that when it fails, these people may
welcome you into the eternal homes. Whoever can be trusted in little
things can also be trusted in great ones; whoever is dishonest in
slight matters will also be dishonest in greater ones. So if you have
not been trustworthy in handling filthy money, who could entrust you
with true wealth? And if you have not been trustworthy with things
that are not really yours, who will give you the wealth which is your
own? No servant can serve two masters. Either he does not like the one
and is fond of the other, or he regards one highly and the other with
contempt. You cannot give yourself both to God and to Money." The
Pharisees, who loved money, heard all this and sneered at Jesus. He
said to them, "You do your best to be considered righteous by people.
But God knows the heart, and what rises high among humans is loathed
by God."

REFLECTION
We're all familiar with the saying, "Money makes the world go `round."
This is quite true, considering that most people try to accumulate
money and riches in their lifetime, thinking that these will give them
security and peace of mind. Money by itself is not evil. When used
properly, it can do a lot of good. It is how we treat and use money
that determines whether we control our wealth or we allow it to
control us.

Jesus himself doesn't condemn the use of money. In fact, he encourages
its use as long as it is wisely done and for the good. "The man who
can be trusted in little things can be trusted in great; the man who
is dishonest in little things will be dishonest in great" (Lk 16 :
10). Obviously, Jesus considers money ("little [basic] things") more
as a means than as the end. We are all stewards of the gifts and
riches that God has given us. We have to use these gifts to help
ourselves and others to obtain the "genuine riches" that God has
prepared for us in Heaven.

Our true treasure and birthright is to be united with our Creator. Our
hear t should always be set on being united with God and not on the
material things of this world. What's usually considered important in
this world is not what God wants. "You cannot be the slave both of God
and of money" (Lk 16 : 13). What do we choose?
