SATURDAY, 5th Week in Ordinary Time

February 10, 2018 – SATURDAY, 5th Week in Ordinary Time

St. Scholastica, Virgin and Religious Founder

St. Jose Luis Sanchez del Rio, Martyr

Memorial. White.

1 Kgs 12: 26 - 32; 13: 33- 34 / Mk 8: 1 – 10

St. Scholastica (480 - 547), twin sister of St. Benedict (480 -547), founded the Order of Benedictine Sisters, following the Rule of her brother, St. Benedict.

Canonized by Pope Francis on 16 October 2016, St. Jose Luis Sanchez del Rio (1913- 1928) was martyred by the Mexican government during the Cristeros War for refusing to deny his Faith.

FROM THE 1ST READING:             1 Kgs 13: 33- 34

After this, Jeroboam did not abstain from doing evil. Instead he made priests for the high places from among the people; he consecrated anyone who wanted to be a priest for the high places. And this became the sin of the family of Jeroboam for which it was cut off and destroyed from the face of the earth.

GOSPEL READING:           Mk 8: 1 -10

Soon afterward, Jesus was in the midst of another large crowd that obviously had nothing to eat. So he called his disciples and said to them, "I feel sorry for these people because they have been with me for three days and now have nothing to eat. If I send them to their homes hungry, they will faint on the way; some of them have come a long way."

His disciples replied, "Where in a deserted place like this could we get enough bread to feed these people?" He asked them, "How many loaves have you?" And they answered, "Seven."

Then he ordered the crowd to sit down on the ground. Taking the seven loaves and giving thanks, he broke them and handed them to his disciples to distribute. And they distributed them among the people. They also had some small fish, so Jesus said a blessing and asked that these be shared as well.

The people ate and were satisfied. The broken pieces were collected, seven wicker baskets full of leftovers. Now there had been about four thousand people. Jesus sent them away and immediately got into the boat with his disciples and went to the region of Dalmanutha.

REFLECTION

In the first reading Jeroboam leads his people away from Yahweh the God of Israel. He appoints his own priests and creates worship for other gods in the high places.

Unlike Jeroboam, let us remain faithful to the Church and to the worship of our one true God.

In the multiplication of loaves of fishes, Jesus feeds four thousand in the desert with seven loaves of bread and a few little fish, with seven wicker baskets full of leftovers.

A prelude to the Eucharist to give us spiritual food and drink Jesus shows his concern for the people in their need for food. We are also encouraged to show concern for others in their need for food and other bodily and spiritual needs. Let us be active in support of such activities in the parish and in other organizations.
