TUESDAY 5TH WEEK OF LENT – YEAR II

MARCH 27, 2012
TUESDAY 5TH WEEK OF LENT – YEAR II

Nm 21:4-9 / Jn 8:21-30

NUMBERS 21:4-9
From Mount Hor they set out by the Red Sea road to go around the land
of Edom. The people were discouraged by the journey and began to com
plain against God and Moses, "Why have you brought us out of Egypt to
die in the wilderness? There is neither bread nor water here and we
are disgusted with this tasteless manna." Yahweh then sent fiery
serpents against them. They bit the people and many of the Israelites
died. Then the people came to Moses and said, "We have sinned,
speaking against Yahweh and against you. Plead with Yahweh to take the
serpents away." Moses pleaded for the people and Yahweh said to him,
"Make a fiery serpent and set it on a standard; whoever has been
bitten and then looks at it shall live." So Moses made a bronze
serpent and set it on a standard. Whenever a man was bitten, he looked
towards the bronze serpent and he lived.

JOHN 8:21-30
Again Jesus said to them, "I am going away, and though you look for
me, you will die in your sin. Where I am going you cannot come." The
Jews wondered, "Why does he say that we can't come where he is going?
Will he kill himself?" But Jesus said, "You are from below and I am
from above; you are of this world and I am not of this world. That is
why I told you that you will die in your sins. And you shall die in
your sins, unless you believe that I am He." They asked him, "Who are
you?"; and Jesus said, "Just what I have told you from the beginning.
I have much to say about you and much to condemn; but the One who sent
me is truthful and everything I learned from him, I proclaim to the
world." They didn't understand that Jesus was speaking to them about
the Father. So Jesus said, "When you have lifted up the Son of Man,
then you will know that I am He and that I do nothing of myself, but I
say just what the Father taught me. He who sent me is with me and has
not left me alone; because I always do what pleases him." As Jesus
spoke like this, many believed in him.

REFLECTION
Because of this, the Lord sent them serpents. Time passed and the
people asked for forgiveness. The Lord showed mercy, giving a chance
to those who wanted to be saved.

We sometimes take for granted and even complain about the blessings
that are given to us when we should instead be grateful for what we
have. Indeed, everything that we have – including our life – is a
blessing from God. Without Him, we are nothing.

When we realize that we need to be grateful for our blessings, we
become closer to God. He always gives us opportunities, allowing us to
change for the better. The bronze serpent on a pole reminds us of the
healing power of God. When we acknowledge our wrongdoings and are
ready for reconciliation, God gives us the opportunity to return to
Him, and get back on the right track.

You sanctify whatever you are grateful for. (Anthony de Mello, S.J.)

ANNUNCIATION OF THE LORD

MARCH 26, 2012
ANNUNCIATION OF THE LORD
MONDAY 5TH WEEK OF LENT – YEAR II

Is 7:10-14; 8:10 / Heb 10:4-10 / Lk 1:26-38

ISAIAH 7:10-14; 8:10
Once again Yahweh addressed Ahaz, "Ask for a sign from Yahweh your
God, let it come either from the deepest depths or from the heights of
heaven." But Ahaz answered, "I will not ask, I will not put Yahweh to
the test." Then Isaiah said, "Now listen, descendants of David. Have
you not been satisfied trying the patience of people, that you also
try the patience of my God? Therefore the Lord himself will give you a
sign: Devise a plan and it will be thwarted, make a resolve and it
will not stand, for God-is-with-us.

HEBREWS 10:4-10
Never will the blood of bulls and goats take away these sins. This is
why on entering the world, Christ says: You did not desire sacrifice
and offering; you were not pleased with burnt offerings and sin
offerings. Then I said: "Here I am. It was written of me in the
scroll. I will do your will, O God." First he says: Sacrifice,
offerings, burnt offerings and sin offerings you did not desire nor
were you pleased with them—although they were required by the Law.
Then he says: Here I am to do your will. This is enough to nullify the
first will and establish the new. Now, by this will of God, we are
sanctified once and for all by the sacrifice of the body of Christ
Jesus.

LUKE 1:26-38
In the sixth month, the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a town of
Galilee called Nazareth. He was sent to a young virgin, who was
betrothed to a man named Joseph, of the family of David; and the
virgin's name was Mary. The angel came to her and said, "Rejoice, full
of grace, the Lord is with you." Mary was troubled at these words,
wondering what this greeting could mean. But the angel said, "Do not
fear, Mary, for God has looked kindly on you. You shall conceive and
bear a son, and you shall call him Jesus. He will be great, and shall
rightly be called Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the
kingdom of David, his ancestor; he will rule over the people of Jacob
forever, and his reign shall have no end." Then Mary said to the
angel, "How can this be, since I am a virgin?" And the angel said to
her, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you and the power of the Most
High will overshadow you; therefore, the holy child to be born of you
shall be called Son of God. Even your relative Elizabeth is expecting
a son in her old age, although she was unable to have a child; and she
is now in her sixth month. With God nothing is impossible." Then Mary
said, "I am the handmaid of the Lord, let it be done to me as you have
said." And the angel left her.

REFLECTION
Be it done to me according to your word." The fiat (defined formal
authorization) at the Anunciation set in motion the way for our
redemption. This was not the end of saying `yes' for Mother Mary, but
only its beginning. With the assent to God's will came the birth of
her important Son in a humble stable, the hurried escape to Egypt, "I
must be about my Father's business" after the heart-stopping search
for the One entrusted to her. With the `yes' to God came His further
revelations, more occasions of `yes,' each time more profound than
that first `yes.' "Woman, my time is not yet come," yet not a word
from her, even during her own version of his way of the Cross.

But the swords that Simeon said would pierce her heart were but glints
of the great light of the Resurrection and glory, likely shared with
her. Now we, too, walk Mary's way. We try to be reflections of her
assent to the Father's will. Our earthly life by some distant way
parallels hers. We have mini-versions of the swords that pierced her
heart, abbreviated ways of the Cross. Would that Mary's strength,
faith, and trust in the wisdom of God's ways be our own!
