TUESDAY 23RD WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME – YEAR II

SEPTEMBER 7, 2010
TUESDAY 23RD WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME – YEAR II

FIRST CORINTHIANS 6:1-11
Is one of you with a complaint against another so brazen as to seek
judgement from sinners and not from God's holy people? Do you not
realise that the holy people of God are to be the judges of the world?
And if the world is to be judged by you, are you not competent for
petty cases? Do you not realise that we shall be the judges of angels?
- then quite certainly over matters of this life. But when you have
matters of this life to be judged, you bring them before those who are
of no account in the Church! I say this to make you ashamed of
yourselves. Can it really be that it is impossible to find in the
community one sensible person capable of deciding questions between
brothers, and that this is why brother goes to law against brother,
and that before unbelievers? No; it is a fault in you, by itself, that
one of you should go to law against another at all: why do you not
prefer to suffer injustice, why not prefer to be defrauded? And here
you are, doing the injustice and the defrauding, and to your own
brothers. Do you not realise that people who do evil will never
inherit the kingdom of God? Make no mistake -- the sexually immoral,
idolaters, adulterers, the self-indulgent, sodomites, thieves, misers,
drunkards, slanderers and swindlers, none of these will inherit the
kingdom of God. Some of you used to be of that kind: but you have been
washed clean, you have been sanctified, and you have been justified in
the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and through the Spirit of our God.

LUKE 6:12-19
Now it happened in those days that he went onto the mountain to pray;
and he spent the whole night in prayer to God. When day came he
summoned his disciples and picked out twelve of them; he called them
'apostles': Simon whom he called Peter, and his brother Andrew, James,
John, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, James son of Alphaeus,
Simon called the Zealot, Judas son of James, and Judas Iscariot who
became a traitor. He then came down with them and stopped at a piece
of level ground where there was a large gathering of his disciples,
with a great crowd of people from all parts of Judaea and Jerusalem
and the coastal region of Tyre and Sidon who had come to hear him and
to be cured of their diseases. People tormented by unclean spirits
were also cured, and everyone in the crowd was trying to touch him
because power came out of him that cured them all.

REFLECTION
We know a lot about the apostles Peter and John, much less about the
others and only infamy about Judas Iscariot. And yet, they all shared
in the honor of having been selected by Jesus. We need not be envious
of these apostles. At baptism, Christ himself, speaking through the
priest who baptized us, called each of us by name. Perhaps we share an
apostolic name, but whatever our name, it became ours and served to
identify us.

There is something very personal about being called by name, and when
we are recognized and singled out in this manner by a person of
prominence, we are thrilled. The use of one's personal name shows
recognition, often affection and respect. We should have a proper
sense of our dignity through baptism, and we must recognize that
dignity in others. People of dignity do not stoop to actions below
them and understand how to treat others with respect. That is why St.
Paul was disappointed that the Corinthians descended so low as to hail
one another into court over squabbles and disagreements. Some people
might say that St. Paul was idealistic and native about the hard
realities of life, but that is only because they do not have his sense
of the dignity possessed by anyone who is called by Christ.

We are a group of people called and selected by Christ as surely as
were the apostles. We should never think that anyone of us is
insignificant in God's plan. We are part of the history which Christ
himself shapes. And he wants each one of us to be a part of that
history as living witnesses to faith. As we worship God today, let us
pray for the grace to live and act in accord with the Christian
dignity which is ours as people specially consecrated and dedicated to
the love and service of God and people.

MONDAY 23RD WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME – YEAR II

SEPTEMBER 6, 2010
MONDAY 23RD WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME – YEAR II

FIRST CORINTHIANS 5:1-8
It is widely reported that there is sexual immorality among you,
immorality of a kind that is not found even among gentiles: that one
of you is living with his stepmother. And you so filled with your own
self-importance! It would have been better if you had been grieving
bitterly, so that the man who has done this thing were turned out of
the community. For my part, however distant I am physically, I am
present in spirit and have already condemned the man who behaved in
this way, just as though I were present in person. When you have
gathered together in the name of our Lord Jesus, with the presence of
my spirit, and in the power of our Lord Jesus, hand such a man over to
Satan, to be destroyed as far as natural life is concerned, so that on
the Day of the Lord his spirit may be saved. Your self-satisfaction is
ill founded. Do you not realise that only a little yeast leavens the
whole batch of dough? Throw out the old yeast so that you can be the
fresh dough, unleavened as you are. For our Passover has been
sacrificed, that is, Christ; let us keep the feast, then, with none of
the old yeast and no leavening of evil and wickedness, but only the
unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.

LUKE 6:6-11
Now on another Sabbath he went into the synagogue and began to teach,
and a man was present, and his right hand was withered. The scribes
and the Pharisees were watching him to see if he would cure somebody
on the Sabbath, hoping to find something to charge him with. But he
knew their thoughts; and he said to the man with the withered hand,
'Get up and stand out in the middle!' And he came forward and stood
there. Then Jesus said to them, 'I put it to you: is it permitted on
the Sabbath to do good, or to do evil; to save life, or to destroy
it?' Then he looked round at them all and said to the man, 'Stretch
out your hand.' He did so, and his hand was restored. But they were
furious and began to discuss the best way of dealing with Jesus.

REFLECTION
Today's gospel reading gives us a good lesson in the spirit in which
God's laws are to be kept. The Scribes and the Pharisees were ready to
find a charge against Jesus if he cured the man with the withered hand
on the Sabbath. Jesus said: "I ask you, is it lawful to do good on the
Sabbath or evil? To preserve life, or destroy it?" Then he cured the
man though it was the Sabbath day.

God's Law should never be used as an excuse for not doing good.
Sticking to a rule is no excuse for failing in charity.

On another occasion the Pharisees' excused themselves from honoring
parents because they said they were giving this honor to God instead.
Christ's comment was: "Hypocrites; these people pay me lip service,
but their hearts are far from me".

We cannot say that we honor God and at the same time not honor our
parents. Today we hear much talk about love of neighbor, sincerity,
genuineness, authenticity. Could Christ make the same accusation
against us? He can certainly accuse us of talk, talk, talk; if there
is no real love, no honesty, no sincerity in our lives? Real love in
action demands sacrifice. To love we must give not just money or other
gifts but give our very selves in the service of God and our
fellowmen.

If we want to get anywhere in really keeping God's laws, we must learn
that love is the number one commandment. We have to love and act out
of love even when it hurts, even when it makes us unpopular. Love must
be the first criterion in the observance of all laws.
