SATURDAY, 32nd Week in Ordinary Time
November 18, 2017 – SATURDAY, 32nd Week in Ordinary Time
Dedication of the Churches of Sts. Peter and Paul in Rome
Green
Acts 28: 11 - 16, 30- 31 / Mt 14: 22- 33
Originally built in the fourth century (300 AD), the basilica of St. Peter in Rome was built over his tomb; reconstructed in the 14th century, the present basilica was completed in 1626.
The basilica of St. Paul on the Ostian Way was likewise built over the tomb of St. Paul by Valentinian II in 386. Destroyed by fire in 1823, the new basilica was consecrated in 1854 by Pope Pius IX, who joined the celebration of the two basilicas into one.
GOSPEL READING: Mt 14: 22 - 33
Immediately Jesus obliged his disciples to get into the boat and go ahead of him to the other side, while he sent the crowd away. And having sent the people away, he went up the mountain by himself to pray. By nightfall, he was there alone. Meanwhile, the boat was very far from land, dangerously rocked by the waves for the wind was against it.
At daybreak, Jesus came to them walking on the lake. When they saw him walking on the sea, they were terrified, thinking that it was a ghost. And they cried out in fear. But at once Jesus said to them, "Courage! Do not be afraid. It is me!" Peter answered, "Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you walking on the water."
Jesus said to him, "Come." And Peter got out of the boat, walking on the water to go to Jesus. But, in the face of the strong wind, he was afraid and began to sink. So he cried out, "Lord, save me!" Jesus immediately stretched out his hand and took hold of him saying, "Man of little faith, why did you doubt?"
As they got into the boat, the wind dropped. Then those in the boat bowed down before Jesus saying, "Truly, you are the Son of God!"
REFLECTION
In good times it is easy to say that we believe in God and in his power to save us. But, the moment life shakes a bit, when challenges come, we
easily fear and panic and try to take things under our control, depending upon our own capabilities, strength and wisdom.
We forget that God calls us to have courage with him. We easily doubt or forget his promise that he will never leave us and tend to neglect his offer to save us amidst any storm or difficulty.
The Lord invites us to come closely to him, to bring our problems and worries before him and to depend on him. In this way, we can do all things, not by our power and might, but by his.
