TUESDAY 11TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME – YEAR I

JUNE 14, 2011
TUESDAY 11TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME – YEAR I

2 Cor 8:1-9 / Ps 146:2, 5-6, 7, 8-9 / Mt 5:43-

2 CORINTHIANS 8:1-9
Regarding meat from the offerings to idols, we know that all of us
have knowledge but knowledge puffs up, while love builds. If anyone
thinks that he has knowledge, he does not yet know as he should know,
but if someone loves (God), he has been known (by God). Can we, then,
eat meat from offerings to the idols? We know that an idol is without
existence and that there is no God but one. People speak indeed of
other gods in heaven and on earth and, in this sense, there are many
gods and lords. Yet for us, there is but one God, the Father, from
whom ev erything comes, and to whom we go. And there is one Lord,
Christ Jesus, through whom everything exists and through him we exist.
Not everyone, however, has that know ledge. For some persons, who
until recently took the idols seriously, that food remains linked to
the idol and eating of it stains their conscience which is unformed.
It is not food that brings us closer to God. If we eat, we gain
nothing, and if we do not eat, we do not lose anything. We are free,
of course, but let not your freedom cause others, who are less
prepared, to fall.

MATTHEW 5:43-48
Jesus said to his disciples, "You have heard that it was said: Love
your neighbor and do not do good to your enemy. But this I tell you:
Love your enemies, and pray for those who persecute you, so that you
may be children of your Father in Heaven. For he makes his sun rise on
both the wicked and the good, and he gives rain to both the just and
the unjust. "If you love those who love you, what is special about
that? Do not even tax collectors do as much? And if you are friendly
only to your friends, what is so exceptional about that? Do not even
the pagans do as much? For your part you shall be righteous and per
fect in the way your heavenly Father is righteous and perfect."

REFLECTION
Today's exhortation from Matthew to "Love your enemies and pray for
those who persecute you" must be one of the hardest things for human
beings to do. It not only goes against the grain of popular thinking,
but also goes against human nature that tends to defend itself from
enemies. Emotions play a vital role in propagating this notion of
hating your enemies as well. The only way we will be able to live this
out is if we continue to read and meditate on God's Word every day.
The values of the world are totally opposed to that of the Kingdom and
if we do not decide which side we are on, the journey to heaven will
truly be a long and winding one.

Allow the Lord to speak to you today. His Spirit will enlighten our
hear ts and minds to think like the Father in heaven. In the silence
of your heart ask him to bless your desire to be a good witness of the
Kingdom that you may be a true child of the Father, who in his justice
and generosity, sends rain and makes the sun shine on both the good
and the evil.
