1ST WEEK OF ADVENT, LITURGICAL CYCLE B, YEAR I, VIOLET

DECEMBER 1, 2011, THURSDAY
MEMORIAL, STS. EDMUND CAMPION AND ROBERT SOUTHWELL, MARTYRS
1ST WEEK OF ADVENT, LITURGICAL CYCLE B, YEAR I, VIOLET

Is 26:1-6 / Ps 118:1, 8-9, 19-21, 25-27 / Mt 7:21, 24-27

ISAIAH 26:1-6
On that day this song will be sung in the land of Judah: We have a
strong city, he himself has set up walls and fortifications to protect
us. Open the gates! Let the righteous nation enter, she who is firm in
faithfulness. You keep in perfect peace the one of steadfast mind, the
one who trusts in you. Trust in Yahweh forever, for Yahweh is an
everlasting Rock. He brought down those who dwell on high, he laid low
the lofty city, he razed it to the ground, leveled it to the dust, Now
it is trampled the poor and the lowly tread upon it.

MATTHEW 7:21, 24-2
Jesus said to his disciples, "Not everyone who says to me: Lord! Lord!
will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my
heavenly Father. "So, then, anyone who hears these words of mine and
acts accordingly is like a wise man, who built his house on rock. The
rain poured, the rivers flooded, and the wind blew and struck that
house, but it did not collapse because it was built on rock. But
anyone who hears these words of mine and does not act accordingly, is
like a fool who built his house on sand. The rain poured, the rivers
flooded, and the wind blew and struck that house; it collapsed, and
what a terrible fall that was!"

REFLECTION
Great crowds followed Jesus wherever he went – Galilee, Decapolis,
Jerusalem, Judaea and even beyond Judaea. What he taught was meant not
only for them that time, but also for us in this modern world.

Who were his true disciples? He said that even if we call out to him
"Lord, Lord," this will not entitle us to enter the Kingdom of the
Father. What is more important is that we do the will of the Father.
If we put our trust in God, " …he is an everlasting rock…" Is. 26:4,
listen to his words and do what is asked of us, then we are like the
man who built his house on a rock – a solid foundation.(Mt. 7:24) We
understand what we are supposed to do, and what he meant by "no rains,
no flood, no strong wind will destroy it." The Lord Jesus will not, do
not fail us no matter what temptation we experience provided we call
on him. He is always with us to help us, to save us from falling. Do
we still doubt his promise to us? Like the people then, the crowd
around him, let us thank him, trust him more and believe what he has
done and continues to do for us.

Lord, Lord, help us to know our Father's will. Give us listening ears
and loving hearts to act always on His most holy will.
