1 Sm 4: 1 – 11 / Mk 1: 40 - 45

GOSPEL READING:           Mk 1: 40- 45

A leper came to Jesus and begged him, "If you so will, you can make me clean." Moved with pity, Jesus stretched out his hand and touched him, saying, "I will; be clean." The leprosy left the man at once and he was made clean. As Jesus sent the man away, he sternly warned him, "Don't tell anyone about this, but go and show yourself to the priest and for the cleansing bring the offering ordered by Moses in this way you will make your declaration."

However, as soon as the man went out, he began spreading the news everywhere, so that Jesus could no longer openly enter any town. But even though he stayed in the rural areas, people came to him from everywhere.

REFLECTION

In today's Gospel reading a leper approaches Jesus to be cured, "If you so will, you can make me clean." The leper was sure, from all he has heard about the miracle-worker Jesus, that Jesus could cleanse him of his leprosy. Was the leper as sure that Jesus would do so? Jesus responded to the leper's request immediately: "I will, be clean."

How do we approach Jesus when we ask him for something we need? Do we truly believe he will answer our prayer? Like the leper we know he can grant our request: but will he?

It is time we examine our faith in Jesus. Exactly how much do we have trust in him and in his power and in his compassion and care for us? Do we really believe in the power of prayer and in the power of Jesus? Jesus will certainly respond to our prayer with great compassion, as he did to the leper's plea. Except that his response may not be as and when we hoped for it.

Let us pray for an increase in our faith in Jesus..
