MEMORIAL, ST. VINCENT DE PAUL, PRIEST

SEPTEMBER 27, 2011
MEMORIAL, ST. VINCENT DE PAUL, PRIEST
TUESDAY 26TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME – YEAR I

Zech 8:20-23 / Ps 87:1-3, 4-5, 6-7 / Lk 9:51-56

ZECHARIAH 8:20-23
Yahweh, the God of hosts speaks, "People will come from other nations,
people from great cities. The inhabitants of one town will talk with
those of another and say: `Come, let us go and implore the favor of
Yahweh, and I, too, will seek Yahweh.' Many great peoples and powerful
nations will come seeking Yahweh, God of hosts, in Jerusalem and pray
to him." Yahweh, the God of hosts assures you, "In those days ten men
of different languages spoken in various lands, will take hold of a
Jew by the hem of his garment and say: We, too, want to go with you
for we have heard that God is with you."

LUKE 9:51-56
As the time drew near when Jesus would be taken up to heaven, he made
up his mind to go to Jerusalem. He had sent ahead of him some
messengers who entered a Samaritan village to prepare a lodging for
him. But the people would not receive him because he was on his way to
Jerusalem. Seeing this, James and John, his disciples said, "Lord, do
you want us to call down fire from heaven to reduce them to ashes?"
Jesus turned and rebuked them, and they went on to another village.

REFLECTION
Jesus and his disciples were headed for Jerusalem. This would be his
final destination where he would prepare himself as the "Lamb" for the
Passover Meal. Jesus' disciples were all witnesses to his great wisdom
and compassion. They also saw him perform great and spectacular
miracles of healing, expelling demons and raising people from the
dead. The disciples indeed had firsthand experience of Divine Power
realized in the person of Jesus.

Naturally though, because they were only human, their tendency was to
think in terms of human wisdom. Human weaknesses dictated impulsive
reactions, more like reflex actions to a given situation. The disciple
brothers James and John had been frustrated with their efforts to
preach the good news in the towns where they had been sent. They
impulsively asked Jesus to call down fire from heaven and burn up
these towns.

Indeed God's ways are not man's ways. God is constantly teaching us
this throughout our lifetime. Life daily asks us all sorts of
questions. Our response to these questions will measure our progress.

Great power comes with natural purity. This power describes the Good
News which Jesus wants us to hear. Although convinced by the great
power of God's word, we must not deal with it as though it were a
human word. Neither should we force others to believe and accept God's
word right away. The fruits of Love will lead people to recognize that
the message is authentic; by their own free will they will be
convinced to accept willingly and wholeheartedly the truth of God's
love, the Power that gives Life, Life to the fullest.

MONDAY 26TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME – YEAR I

SEPTEMBER 26, 2011
MEMORIAL, STS. COSMAS AND DAMIAN, MARTYRS
MONDAY 26TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME – YEAR I

Zech 8:1-8 / Ps 102:16-18, 19-21, 29, 22-23 / Lk 9:46-50

ZECHARIAH 8:1-8
The word of Yahweh, the God of hosts was directed to me in this way,
"I am intensely jealous for Zion, stirred by a burning anger for her
sake. Yahweh says: I will return to Zion and live in her midst.
Jerusalem shall be called City of faithfulness and the Mountain of
Yahweh of hosts, the Mountain of holiness." Yahweh, God of hosts
speaks, "Old men and women will again sit in the squares, each with a
stick in hand on account of their great age. The squares of the city
will be filled with girls and boys playing." Yahweh, God of hosts
declares, "If that seems impossible in the eyes of those who have
returned from exile, will it be impossible for me as well?"—word of
Yahweh. Yahweh, God of hosts says, "See, I am going to save my people,
bringing them from the east and from the west and they will live in
Jerusalem. They will be my people and I shall be their God in truth
and in justice."

LUKE 9:46-50
One day the disciples were arguing about which of them was the most
important. But Jesus knew their thoughts, so he took a little child
and stood him by his side. Then he said to them, "Whoever welcomes
this little child in my name welcomes me; and whoever welcomes me,
welcomes the one who sent me. And listen: the one who is found to be
the least among you all, is the one who is the greatest." Then John
spoke up, "Master, we saw someone who drove out demons by calling upon
your name, and we tried to forbid him because he doesn't follow you
with us." But Jesus said, "Don't forbid him. He who is not against you
is for you."

REFLECTION
Before the disciples of Jesus realized that his kingdom is not of this
world, there was jealousy and the desire to be the "first" among them
as recounted in the reading for today. The picture of Jesus taking a
child beside him brings home the point: that like the simplicity of a
child, we should not seek honor, riches, praise and gratitude for all
the work we are doing, but lay importance to what is truly great in
the eyes of God.

There was a farmer who owned only a few hectares of rice fields which
he personally developed and tilled together with his tenants. Through
the years, from humble beginnings and through hard work, his small
property grew and more tenants were given jobs. The tenants' children
were sent to study till college and one of them even became a nurse.
When the law of land reform was enforced, he lost practically all the
rice fields he had developed and he could do nothing but to accept the
blow literally with tears in his eyes. And yet deep in his hear t, he
must have been consoled by the thought that, throughout the 82 years
that the good Lord has given him, he lived simply and worked not only
to support his four children, but also to give as much help as he
could to the less fortunate.

Today's food for reflection: Am I storing riches in this world, or
have I fully understood Jesus' message that he who is the least among
us is the one who is truly great?
