10th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

June 10, 2018 - 10th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Cycle B. Green.

Gn 3: 9- 15 / 2 Cor 4:13 -5: 1 / Mk 3: 20- 35

1ST READING:    Gn 3: 9- 15

Yahweh God called the man, saying to him, "Where are you?" He said, "I heard your voice in the garden and I was afraid because I was naked, so I hid." God said, "Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten of the tree I ordered you not to eat?" The man answered, "The woman you put with me gave me fruit from the tree and I ate it." God said to the woman, "What have you done?" The woman said, "The serpent deceived me and I ate."

Yahweh God said to the serpent, "Since you have done that, be cursed among all the cattle and wild beasts! You will crawl on your belly and eat dust all the days of your life. I will make you enemies, you and the woman, your offspring and her offspring. He will crush your head and you will strike his heel."

FROM THE GOSPEL READING:     Mk 3: 31 - 35

Then his mother and his brothers came. As they stood outside, they sent someone to call him. The crowd sitting around Jesus told him, "Your mother and your brothers are outside asking for you." He replied, "Who are my mother and my brothers? And looking around at those who sat there he said, "Here are my mother and my brothers. Whoever does the will of God is brother and sister and mother to me."

REFLECTION

Poor Eve. She always gets the blame. Through the ages, we have blamed the fall of humanity in the Garden of Eden on Eve because she listened to the serpent, because she tempted Adam, because she was not strong enough to say No. We even feel at times that everything was premeditated, that Eve wanted Adam to disobey God. And so we have blamed Eve for so many years. Poor Eve!

But we should remember that Adam had free will. Adam was not an innocent simpleton who did not know what was going on. Adam made a choice: he ate the fruit Eve gave to him. He could have said No? He could have reminded Eve of God's clear prohibition on eating the fruit of that tree. But, for whatever reason or reasons he had, he readily accepted what Eve offered him and ate the fruit, disobeying God's command.

And yet he immediately blamed her when God asked how he knew he was naked. He never really took full responsibility for his actions.

Yes, we get tempted. We get tempted every day, by so many things. And sometimes, when we yield, like Adam and like Eve, we immediately blame someone or something else: "The woman you put with me gave me fruit from the tree and I ate it." "The serpent deceived me and I ate." This is all too typical of us and our human nature. Interesting that the account did not have God asking the serpent why he acted the way he did: clearly God and the serpent knew that the serpent knew what he was did.

And yet we have to remember that we are responsible for our own decisions and actions, that we can choose to say Yes or No, that we can agree of disagree, that we can stand up or not for what we believe in.. God has always respected us enough to allow us the freedom he gave us to make our own decisions. But we remember that with that freedom comes true responsibility.

MONDAY, 10TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME

June 11, 2018 – MONDAY, 10TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME

St. Barnabas, Apostle

Memorial.. Red.

Acts 11: 21b- 26; 13: 1-3 / Mt 5: 1 – 12

St. Barnabas, a companion of St. Paul the Apostle, was stoned to death in

Cyprus.

FROM THE 1ST READING:             Acts 11: 24; 12: 2

Meanwhile the word of God was increasing and spreading....

On one occasion while they were celebrating the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said to them, "Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul and send them to do the work for which I have called them."

GOSPEL READING:           Mt 5: 1 - 12

When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up the mountain. He sat down and his disciples gathered around him. Then he spoke and began to teach them: "Fortunate are those who have the spirit of the poor, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Fortunate are those who mourn, they shall be comforted. Fortunate are the gentle, they shall possess the land. Fortunate are those who hunger and thirst for justice, for they shall be satisfied.

"Fortunate are the merciful, for they shall find mercy. Fortunate are those with a pure heart, for they shall see God.. Fortunate are those who work for peace, they shall be called children of God. Fortunate are those persecuted for the cause of justice, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Fortunate are you, when people insult you and speak all kinds of evil against you because you are my followers, for a great reward is kept for you in God. This is how this people persecuted the prophets who lived before you."

REFLECTION

In the first reading we see the amazing spread of the Gospel message and the number of believers in the early Church, especially through the ministry and travels of St. Paul.

In the Gospel reading, the Beatitudes give us values to aspire for. The Beatitudes give us hope to move forward in very difficult times and challenges. The Beatitudes promise light and joy at the end of sorrow and pains in this life.

All want to experience the joys of the heavenly kingdom: the Beatitudes tell us that heaven will be enjoyed by the poor in spirit, the gentle and merciful, the pure of heart and the peace-makers, and those persecuted for justice's sake.

In a way the Beatitudes also tell us that we can have a "foretaste" of the joy and glory of heaven even now in earth. We will be blessed if we live in poverty of spirit, in being merciful and pure of heart, in working for peace and in being ready to be persecuted for the cause of truth and justice. Indeed these choices are not the usual choices or preferences of men and women of this world. But we are men and women seeking and living the kingdom of God even while we live in this world.

Do we want to be among the "fortunate" in the kingdom of God, even now and forever in heaven?

WE PRAY FOR MTQ DAILY PRAYER INTENTIONS:

     Miguel Gonzales

WEDDINGANNVIERSARY

Have a good day!
