TUESDAY 12TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME – YEAR I
TUESDAY 12TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME – YEAR I
SECOND KINGS 19:9-11, 14-21, 31-35, 36
On hearing that Tirhakah king of Cush was on his way to attack him.
Sennacherib again sent messengers to Hezekiah, saying, 'Tell Hezekiah
king of Judah this, "Do not let your God on whom you are relying
deceive you with the promise: Jerusalem will not fall into the king of
Assyria's clutches. You have learnt by now what the kings of Assyria
have done to all the other countries, devoting them to destruction.
Are you likely to be saved? Hezekiah took the letter from the
messengers' hands and read it; he then went up to the Temple of Yahweh
and spread it out before Yahweh. Hezekiah said this prayer in the
presence of Yahweh, 'Yahweh Sabaoth, God of Israel, enthroned on the
winged creatures, you alone are God of all the kingdoms of the world,
you made heaven and earth. Give ear, Yahweh, and listen; open your
eyes, Yahweh, and see! Hear the words of Sennacherib, who has sent to
insult the living God. It is true, Yahweh, that the kings of Assyria
have destroyed the nations, they have thrown their gods on the fire,
for these were not gods but human artefacts -- wood and stone -- and
hence they have destroyed them. But now, Yahweh our God, save us from
his clutches, I beg you, and let all the kingdoms of the world know
that you alone are God, Yahweh.' Isaiah son of Amoz then sent the
following message to Hezekiah, 'Yahweh, God of Israel, says this, "I
have heard the prayer which you have addressed to me about Sennacherib
king of Assyria." Here is the pronouncement which Yahweh has made
about him: "She despises you, she scorns you, the virgin daughter of
Zion; she tosses her head at you, the daughter of Jerusalem! for a
remnant will issue from Jerusalem, and survivors from Mount Zion.
Yahweh Sabaoth's jealous love will accomplish this. "This, then, is
what Yahweh says about the king of Assyria: "He will not enter this
city, will shoot no arrow at it, confront it with no shield, throw up
no earthwork against it. By the road by which he came, by that he will
return; he will not enter this city, declares Yahweh. I shall protect
this city and save it for my sake and my servant David's sake." 'That
same night the angel of Yahweh went out and struck down a hundred and
eighty-five thousand men in the Assyrian camp. In the early morning
when it was time to get up, there they lay, so many corpses.
Sennacherib struck camp and left; he returned home and stayed in
Nineveh.
MATTHEW 7:6, 12-14
'Do not give dogs what is holy; and do not throw your pearls in front
of pigs, or they may trample them and then turn on you and tear you to
pieces. 'So always treat others as you would like them to treat you;
that is the Law and the Prophets. 'Enter by the narrow gate, since the
road that leads to destruction is wide and spacious, and many take it;
but it is a narrow gate and a hard road that leads to life, and only a
few find it.
REFLECTION
Jesus says, `The gate that leads to damnation is wide, the road is
clear and many choose to travel it. But how narrow is the gate that
leads to life, how rough the road, and how few there are who find it.
In effect Jesus is saying, `Do you know what sin is? Sin is missing
the mark.' That is what the Greek verb for sin, hamartano, means: to
be off target, be a poor shot, to miss the goal.
A sinner is a poor marksman. He keeps missing the target. To make a
field goal on the soccer or football field, you have to aim for the
straight and narrow, that limited space between the goal posts. You
must hit that narrow space to score a goal. You may kick anywhere else
on the field, even into the bleachers, to miss it. The length of your
kick might be impressive, but if you miss that limited target, you
don't score a goal.
Now a sinner is a poor scorer. He keeps missing the goal — the target
which Jesus calls `the narrow gate.' And by missing the goal, sin,
brings about fear, guilt, depression, even mental illness. Many mental
disorders are spiritual disorders. They should not be par t of a
normal, healthy Christian life. God sent his Son Jesus to us, to
restore for us the power of hit ting the target, of aiming
successfully towards the goal, of finding what life really means. Only
God is perfect love. He could trust only his Son to be right on
target, to restore that normal love to our lives.
God the Son, the One whom we can trust, took all our evils, all our
bad marksmanship, on his own shoulders, died to them on the cross,
buried these evils in the grave, and rose to new life, the victorious
new life that He now holds out to us.

MONDAY 12TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME – YEAR II
MEMORIAL, ST. ALOYSIUS GONZAGA, RELIGIOUS
MONDAY 12TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME – YEAR II
SECOND KINGS 17:5-8, 13-15, 18
The king of Assyria invaded the whole country and, coming to Samaria,
laid siege to it for three years. In the ninth year of Hoshea the king
of Assyria captured Samaria and deported the Israelites to Assyria. He
settled them in Halah on the Habor, a river of Gozan, and in the
cities of the Medes. This happened because the Israelites had sinned
against Yahweh their God who had brought them out of Egypt, out of the
grip of Pharaoh king of Egypt. They worshipped other gods, they
followed the practices of the nations which Yahweh had dispossessed
for them. And yet through all the prophets and the seers, Yahweh had
given Israel and Judah this warning, 'Turn from your wicked ways and
keep my commandments and my laws in accordance with the entire Law
which I laid down for your fathers and delivered to them through my
servants the prophets.' But they would not listen, they were as
stubborn as their ancestors, who had no faith in Yahweh their God.
They despised his laws and the covenant which he had made with their
ancestors and the warnings which he had given them. Pursuing futility,
they themselves became futile through copying the nations round them,
although Yahweh had ordered them not to act as they did. Because of
which, Yahweh became enraged with Israel and thrust them away from
him. The tribe of Judah was the only one left.
MATTHEW 7:1-5
'Do not judge, and you will not be judged; because the judgements you
give are the judgements you will get, and the standard you use will be
the standard used for you. Why do you observe the splinter in your
brother's eye and never notice the great log in your own? And how dare
you say to your brother, "Let me take that splinter out of your eye,"
when, look, there is a great log in your own? Hypocrite! Take the log
out of your own eye first, and then you will see clearly enough to
take the splinter out of your brother's eye.
REFLECTION
This reading is very hard to swallow because to recognize the message
of this gospel is to allow ourselves to criticize ourselves. One of
the most painful experiences is to be told of our faults. We cannot
bear to hear our faults, and for some of us, we cannot even see our
faults. The capital sin of pride is always the stumbling block to
conversion. We are often so proud that we cannot accept correction nor
judgment from others. The only way we will stop judging others is when
we recognize the log in our own eye. The only time we can really help
others is when we recognize our own faults. Humility enters when we
can see ourselves clearly as sinners, and with humility we receive the
wisdom from the Holy Spirit.
So the next time we are quick to judge or condemn, let us pause and
remember our own faults and weaknesses, which the Lord has forgiven
and not taken account of.
