FRIDAY 25TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME – YEAR II

SEPTEMBER 24, 2010
FRIDAY 25TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME – YEAR II

ECCLESIASTES 3:1-11
There is a season for everything, a time for every occupation under
heaven: A time for giving birth, a time for dying; a time for
planting, a time for uprooting what has been planted. A time for
killing, a time for healing; a time for knocking down, a time for
building. A time for tears, a time for laughter; a time for mourning,
a time for dancing. A time for throwing stones away, a time for
gathering them; a time for embracing, a time to refrain from
embracing. A time for searching, a time for losing; a time for
keeping, a time for discarding. A time for tearing, a time for sewing;
a time for keeping silent, a time for speaking. A time for loving, a
time for hating; a time for war, a time for peace. What do people gain
from the efforts they make? I contemplate the task that God gives
humanity to labour at. All that he does is apt for its time; but
although he has given us an awareness of the passage of time, we can
grasp neither the beginning nor the end of what God does.

LUKE 9:18-22
Now it happened that he was praying alone, and his disciples came to
him and he put this question to them, 'Who do the crowds say I am?'
And they answered, 'Some say John the Baptist; others Elijah; others
again one of the ancient prophets come back to life.' 'But you,' he
said to them, 'who do you say I am?' It was Peter who spoke up. 'The
Christ of God,' he said. But he gave them strict orders and charged
them not to say this to anyone. He said, 'The Son of man is destined
to suffer grievously, to be rejected by the elders and chief priests
and scribes and to be put to death, and to be raised up on the third
day.'

REFLECTION
Jesus told his disciples that the Messiah must suffer and die in order
that God's work of redemption might be accomplished. How scandalized
the disciples were when they heard this.

We are no different from the apostles. How many of us complain and
feel shocked when we see fervent Christian friends and relatives
undergoing moral suffering, sickness and failure in business? We say,
they don't deserve it. How can God do this? How different really are
God's thoughts and ways from our thoughts and ways?

Through humiliation, suffering, and death on the cross Jesus broke the
powers of sin and death and won for us eternal life and true freedom.
Every Christian must follow the same road which Jesus traveled. No
slave is greater than his master. If we want to share in Christ's
victory, then we must also take up our cross and follow him where he
leads us.

What is the "cross" that you and I must take up each day? How do we
follow Jesus when the road is dark and sailing is rough?? It is in
these trying moments that Jesus reveals his love and solicitude for
us. Who do you say he is? Is he your Companion? Friend? Savior?
Anchor? Light?

THURSDAY 25TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME – YEAR II

SEPTEMBER 23, 2010
THURSDAY 25TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME – YEAR II

ECCLESIASTES 1:2-11
Sheer futility, Qoheleth says. Sheer futility: everything is futile!
What profit can we show for all our toil, toiling under the sun? A
generation goes, a generation comes, yet the earth stands firm for
ever. The sun rises, the sun sets; then to its place it speeds and
there it rises. Southward goes the wind, then turns to the north; it
turns and turns again; then back to its circling goes the wind. Into
the sea go all the rivers, and yet the sea is never filled, and still
to their goal the rivers go. All things are wearisome. No one can say
that eyes have not had enough of seeing, ears their fill of hearing.
What was, will be again, what has been done, will be done again, and
there is nothing new under the sun! Take anything which people acclaim
as being new: it existed in the centuries preceding us. No memory
remains of the past, and so it will be for the centuries to come --
they will not be remembered by their successors.

LUKE 9:7-9
Meanwhile Herod the tetrarch had heard about all that was going on;
and he was puzzled, because some people were saying that John had
risen from the dead, others that Elijah had reappeared, still others
that one of the ancient prophets had come back to life. But Herod
said, 'John? I beheaded him. So who is this I hear such reports
about?' And he was anxious to see him.

REFLECTION
When God decides to make a miracle happen, whether we choose to
believe in it or not, His wondrous summoning occurs without the aid of
earthly or human intervention. After all, the Creator of the universe
can very well do anything He so desires. It is our limited thinking
that inappropriately informs us that we are in control of day-to-day
affairs.

We shouldn't get too carried away by the thought of mastering all we
survey. Yes, we are stewards of this planet, but woe to us if we start
believing our own public relations releases. Of course, there's
nothing wrong in charting the course for correct corporate practices;
it remains commendable to manage the affairs of a small barangay or an
entire nation for that matter. But, when our so very fragile egos
start puffing us up, we should remain wary of such illogical arrogance
and false bravado.

Aiming to be a very important person is okay. But, once we lord it
over our subjects; once we nitpick what we perceive as unintentional
incompetence and normal imperfections; once we look down our nose on
others because of their educational attainment and financial status,
we have become too proud; too big for our breeches, as they say. We
might dangerously be thinking that we are better than God.

Let us pray for humility and meekness. Let us remember our place in
front of our Lord. The joy we experience does come from the
accomplishments we strive for, but its success and triumph are graces
from above. May we be thankful to Him who always looks out for
everything good.
