WEDNESDAY 2ND WEEK OF LENT – YEAR I
WEDNESDAY 2ND WEEK OF LENT – YEAR I
Jer 18:18-20 / Ps 31: 5-6. 14. 15-16 / Mt 20:17-28
JEREMIAH 18:18-20
Then, they said, "Come, let us plot against Jeremiah, for even without him, there will be priests to interpret the Teachings of the Law; there will always be wise men to impart counsel and prophets to proclaim the word. Come, let us accuse him and strike him down instead of listening to what he says." Hear me, O Yahweh! Listen to what my accusers say. Is evil the reward for good? Why do they dig a grave for me? Remember how I stood before you to speak well on their behalf so that your anger might subside.
MATTHEW 20:17-28
When Jesus was going to Jerusalem, he took the twelve disciples aside and said to them, "See, we are going to Jerusalem. There the Son of Man will be betrayed to the chief priests and the teachers of the Law, who will condemn him to death. They will hand him over to the foreigners, who will mock him, scourge him and crucify him. But he will be raised to life on the third day." Then the mother of James and John came to Jesus with her sons, and she knelt down, to ask a favor. Jesus said to her, "What do you want?" And she answered, "Here you have my two sons. Grant that they may sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, when you are in your kingdom." Jesus said to the brothers, "You do not know what you are asking. Can you drink the cup that I am about to drink?" They answered, "We can." Jesus replied, "You will indeed drink my cup, but to sit at my right or at my left is not for me to grant. That will be for those, for whom my Father has prepared it." The other ten heard all this, and were angry with the two brothers. Then Jesus called them to him and said, "You know that the rulers of the nations act as tyrants over them, and the powerful oppress them. It shall not be so among you: whoever wants to be more important in your community shall make himself your servant. And if you want to be the first of all, make yourself the servant of all. Be like the Son of Man who has come, not to be served but to serve, and to give his life to redeem many."
REFLECTION
Just after Christ prophesied his passion, the Zebedees, James and John, wanted an assurance of their place in glory. They understood very little about the mission of Christ. "Gentiles are the ones who want to make their authority felt."
A lot of people are scrambling for positions, power and authority. The noble desire to serve may end up as self-serving. Adulation, recognition, pride and desire for money can destroy the best intentions. Christ chose the path of being the least, to become a servant. He was insulted, spat on, laughed at, and died on the cross, an instrument to punish criminals. He underwent all these out of love for us. Love should then be the reason behind all forms of leadership and service.

TUESDAY 2ND WEEK OF LENT – YEAR I
FEBRUARY 26, 2013
TUESDAY 2ND WEEK OF LENT – YEAR I
Is 1:10,16-20 / Ps 50: 8-9. 16bc-17. 21 and 23 / Mt 23:1-12
ISAIAH 1:10,16-20
Hear the warning of Yahweh, rulers of Sodom. Listen to the word of God, people of Gomorrah." Wash and make yourselves clean. Remove from my sight the evil of your deeds. Put an end to your wickedness and learn to do good. Seek justice and keep in line the abusers; give the fatherless their rights and defend the widow." "Come," says the Lord, "let us reason together. Though your sins be like scarlet, they will be white as snow; though they be as crimson red, they will be white as wool. If you will obey me, you will eat the goods of the earth; but if you resist and rebel, the sword will eat you instead." Truly the Lord has spoken.
MATTHEW 23:1-12
Then Jesus said to the crowds and to his disciples, "The teachers of the Law and the Pharisees have sat down on the chair of Moses. So you shall do and observe all they say, but do not do as they do, for they do not do what they say. They tie up heavy burdens and load them on the shoulders of the people, but they do not even raise a finger to move them. They do everything in order to be seen by people: they wear very wide bands of the Law around their foreheads, and robes with large tassels. They enjoy the first places at feasts and reserved seats in the synagogues, and they like being greeted in the marketplace, and being called `Master' by the people. But you, do not let yourselves be called Master, because you have only one Master, and all of you are brothers and sisters. Neither should you call anyone on earth Father, because you have only one Father, he who is in heaven. Nor should you be called Leader, because Christ is the only Leader for you. Let the greatest among you be the servant of all. For whoever makes himself great shall be humbled, and whoever humbles himself shall be made great.
REFLECTION
We need a compass for the right direction in our lives. This reading highlights shunning earthly honors and recognition. Of course, being recognized is everyone's dream. It gives him a feeling of achievement. Sometimes a statue is erected to give honor to a person whose achievements ought to be remembered. Or a street named after him. However, earthly honor does not guarantee a place in Heaven – it only bloats our pride. They are not counted as heavenly rewards.
Let us not seek to become a "Father," or a leader to be admired and followed. There is a great danger in that as we may think or feel that we are above God in our thoughts and actions. The compass points to service as the only virtue that will merit any notice from God. The only fatherhood we can offer is love for others, as if they were our children. Do we demand to be served or do we serve? Do we put burdens on people, or do we lighten their burdens? Let us learn to be little, humble like little children, for only the little ones will inherit the Kingdom of Heaven. Let us learn to serve by example and humility.
