THURSDAY, 27TH Week in Ordinary Time

October 3, 2019 – THURSDAY, 27TH Week in Ordinary Time
St. Francis Borgia, Priest
Memorial. White.

Neh 8: 1 – 4a, 5 – 6, 7b –12 / Lk 10: 1 – 12

St. Francis Borgia (1510 – 1572) of the famous Borgia family was elected the third Superior-General of the Society of Jesus in 1565.

FROM THE 1ST READING: Neh 8: 5 – 6
Ezra opened the book in the sight of all the people for he was in a higher place; and when he opened it, all the people stood.. Ezra blessed Yahweh, the great God; and all the people lifted up their hands and answered, "Amen! Amen!" And they bowed their heads to the ground.

GOSPEL READING: Lk 10: 1 - 12
After this the Lord appointed seventy-two other disciples and sent them two by two ahead of him to every town and place, where he himself was to go. And he said to them, "The harvest is rich, but the workers are few. So you must ask the Lord of the harvest to send laborers to his harvest. Courage! I am sending you like the lambs among wolves. Set off without purse or bag or sandals; and do not stop at the homes of those you know.

"Whatever house you enter, first bless them saying, 'Peace to this house.' If a friend of peace lives there, the peace shall rest upon that person.. But if not, the blessing will return to you. Stay in that house eating and drinking at their table, for the worker deserves to be paid. Do not move from house to house.

"When they welcome you in any town, eat what they offer you. Heal the sick who are there and say to them, 'The kingdom of God has drawn near to you.'

"But in any town where you are not welcome, go to the marketplace and proclaim, 'Even the dust of your town that clings to our feet, we wipe off and leave with you. But know and be sure that the kingdom of God had come to you.' I tell you that on Judgment Day it will be better for Sodom than for this town."

REFLECTION
In the first reading Ezra leads the people in confirming their covenant with Yahweh as he read to them from the Book of the Law of Moses. "Amen! Amen!" they responded.

In the Gospel reading Jesus sends off his disciples to preach the Good News and spread the Kingdom of God. They told people about life with God. He also instructed them to depend upon the people's generosity for their livelihood and sustenance

Pope St. John Paul II often spoke of the "Culture of Life," as opposed to the "Culture of Death." God gives us the Holy Spirit to bring us the fullness of life. To live this true "Culture of Life," we have to give up inordinate inclinations centering on ourselves.

To preach the Good News is also to transform individuals and communities with God's grace so that they live in God's peace and joy.

FINALLY, we pray for one another, for those who have asked our prayers and for those who need our prayers the most.

Have a good day!
