MONDAY, 27th Week in Ordinary Time

October 9, 2017 – MONDAY, 27th Week in Ordinary Time

St. Denis, Bishop, and Companions, Martyrs

St. John Leonardi, Priest

Green

Jon 1: 1 - 2: 1 - 2, 11 ILk 10: 25- 37

Born in Italy, St. Denis (d. c 258), the first Bishop of Paris, was martyred with two members of his clergy.

An Italian, St. John Leonardi (1541 - 1609) founded the Order of the Clerks Regular of the Mother of God (1574) and a society of priests for the foreign missions which was to become the Society for the Propagation of the Faith.

FROM THE FIRST READING:          Jon 1:12, 15; 2: 1

Jonah said to them, "Pick me up and throw me into the sea. It will quiet down, for I know it is because of me that this storm has come."

They took Jonah and threw him overboard, and the raging sea grew calm again.

Yahweh provided a large fish which swallowed Jonah. He remained in the belly of the fish for three days and three nights.

From the GOSPEL READING:        Lk 10: 29 - 37

The man wanted to keep up appearances, so he replied, "Who is my neighbor?"

Jesus then said, "There was a man going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and he fell into the hands of robbers. They stripped him, beat him and went off leaving him half-dead.

"It happened that a priest was going along that road and saw the man, but passed by on the other side. Likewise a Levite saw the man and passed by on the other side.

"But a Samaritan, too, was going that way, and when he came upon the man, he was moved with compassion. He went over to him and treated his wounds with oil and wine and wrapped them in bandages. Then he put him on his own mount and brought him to an inn where he took care of him.

"The next day he had to set off, but he gave two silver coins to the innkeeper and told him, 'Take care of him and whatever you spend on him, I will repay when I come back."'

Jesus then asked, "Which of these three, do you think, made himself neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of robbers?" The teacher of the Law answered, "The one who had mercy on him." And Jesus said, "Go then and do the same."

REFLECTION

In the first reading Jonah is "sacrificed" to calm the raging sea: a large fish swallows him. Jonah stayed in the belly of the fish for three days and three nights, pre-figuring our Lord in the tomb.

The Gospel reading about the good Samaritan answers the question, "Who is my neighbor?" "The one who had mercy on him."

All of us are called to be compassionate and merciful, especially to the disadvantaged and the poor, the sick and the downtrodden. Who are these in my life? We will be judged on how we acted towards our neighbors.
