Savoyard St. Peter Faber (1506 – 1546), ordained a priest in 1534, was the first priest of the Society of Jesus. He was among its founding members (1540). At the Pope's bidding he preached all over Europe. Beatified by Pope Pius IX in 1872, he was canonized by Pope Francis on 17 December 2013.
St. Eusebius of Vercelli (283? – 371), from Sardinia, was the first Bishop of Vercelli in northern Italy; he defended the divinity of Christ against the Arians.
Frenchman St. Peter Julian Eymard (1811 – 1868), greatly devoted to the Eucharist, founded the Congregation of the Blessed Sacrament.
From the Gospel Reading: Mt 14:23 - 33
And having sent the people away, he went up the mountain by himself to pray. At nightfall, he was there alone. Meanwhile, the boat was very far from land, dangerously rocked by the waves for the wind was against it.
At daybreak, Jesus came to them walking on the lake. When they saw him walking on the sea, they were terrified, thinking that it was a ghost. And they cried out in fear. But at once Jesus said to them, "Courage! Don't be afraid. It's me!" Peter answered, "Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you walking on the water."
Jesus said to him, "Come." And Peter got out of the boat, walking on the water to go to Jesus. But, in face of the strong wind, he was afraid and began to sink. So he cried out, "Lord, save me!" Jesus immediately stretched out his hand and took hold of him, saying, "Man of little faith, why did you doubt?"
As they got into the boat, the wind dropped. Then those in the boat bowed down before Jesus saying, "Truly, you are the Son of God!"
Reflection
"Man of little faith, why did you doubt?" These words of Jesus to Peter truly resonate in our daily life. We pray to Jesus, we praise him, we try our best to follow him, and yet there are times when our faith falters in situations when our prayers seem to be unanswered.
Let us continue to pray and trust in God who loves us beyond measure, keeping in mind that the Holy Spirit is always guiding us, helping us to overcome all the difficulties and trials we face daily. Let our prayer be, "Lord, I believe! Help my unbelief."
