TUESDAY, 13th Week in Ordinary Time

July 2, 2019 – TUESDAY, 13th Week in Ordinary Time

Sts. Bernardine Realino, John Francis Regis and Francis de Geronimo, Priests /
Bl. Julian Maunoir and Anthony Baldunicci, Priests
Memorial. White.

Gn 19: 15 – 29 / Mt 8: 23 – 27

Today's memorial is of Jesuit saints and blessed, priests who faithfully served the Church in Europe: Sts. Bernardine Realino (1530 – 1616), an Italian; Frenchman John Francis Regis (1597 – 1640);   Italian Francis de Geronimo (1642 – 1716); Bl. Julian Maunoir (1606 – 1683), a Frenchman and Anthony
Baldunicci (1665 – 1717), Italian.

FROM THE 1ST READING: Gn 19: 15, 17, 26 – 28
At daybreak the angels urged Lot, saying, "Hurry! Take your wife and two daughters who are here, lest they perish because of the sin of the town." . .. When they were outside, the men said to him, "Flee for your life and don't look back and don't stop anywhere in the plain.  Flee to the mountain lest you perish." . . .

Lot's wife looked back and she became a pillar of salt. Early next morning Abraham returned to the place where he had stood before Yahweh. He looked towards Sodom and Gomorrah and towards all the land of the valley and he saw smoke rising from the earth like the smoke from a furnace.

GOSPEL READING: Mt 8: 23 – 27
Jesus got into the boat and his disciples followed him. Without warning a fierce storm hit the lake, with waves sweeping the boat. But Jesus was asleep..

They woke him and cried, "Lord, save us! We are lost!" But Jesus answered, "Why are you so afraid, you of little faith?" Then he stood up and ordered the wind and sea; and it became completely calm.

The people were astonished. They said, "What kind of man is he? Even the winds and the sea obey him."

REFLECTION
The first reading is about the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah for their sins and depraved actions. God spares Lot and his family; however, Lot's wife ignores the instruction not to look back and is turned into a pillar of salt.

The reading reminds us of God's sense of justice which we should all respect. We cannot take God for granted: beware the wrath of the just God.

In the Gospel reading Jesus calms the winds and the sea. He also calms down the frightened disciples on the boat caught by the strong winds.
When things go bad for us, do we turn to Jesus with faith that he would help and save us? With faith in Jesus we need not fear nor panic, as the apostles in the boat did when the storm came suddenly. Negative things will happen; hopefully we have faith that with God's grace and guidance we can live through those difficult moments.

FINALLY, WE PRAY FOR ONE ANOTHER, FOR THOSE WHO HAVE ASKED OUR PRAYERS AND FOR THOSE WHO NEED OUR PRAYERS THE MOST.

Have a good day!
