THURSDAY, 26TH Week in Ordinary Time
October 4, 2018 – THURSDAY, 26TH Week in Ordinary Time
St. Francis of Assisi, Religious Founder
Memorial. White.
Jb 19: 21 - 27 / Lk 10: 1 – 12
Born in Assisi, St. Francis (1182 - 1226) preached and lived poverty. He founded the Order of Friars Minor in 1210 (Franciscans) and, with St. Clare (1193/94 - 1253), the Order of Poor Clares. He also founded a third order of Brothers and Sisters of Penance. He is the Patron Saint for animals, ecologists and merchants.
FROM THE 1ST READING: Jb 19: 21 - 22, 25- 27
Have pity, my friends, have pity, for God's hand has struck me! Why do you hound me as God does? Will you never have enough of my flesh? ...
I know that my Redeemer lives, and he, the last, will take his stand on earth.
I will be there behind my skin, and in my flesh I shall see God. With my own eyes I shall see him- I and not another. How my heart yearns!
FROM THE GOSPEL READING: Lk 10: 1 - 9
After this the Lord appointed seventy-two other disciples and sent them two by two ahead of him to every town and place, where he himself was to go. And he said to them, "The harvest is rich, but the workers are few. So you must ask the Lord of the harvest to send laborers to his harvest. Courage! I am sending you like lambs among wolves. Set off without purse or bag or sandals; and do not stop at the homes of those you know.
"Whatever house you enter, first bless them saying, 'Peace to this house.' If a friend of peace lives there, the peace shall rest upon that person. But if not, the blessing will return to you. Stay in that house eating and drinking at their table, for the worker deserves to be paid. Do not move from house to house.
"When they welcome you in any town, eat what they offer you. Heal the sick who are there and say to them, 'The kingdom of God has drawn near to you."
REFLECTION
In the first reading we see the great faith and trust of Job in God, despite the great trials and disasters he has had.
In the Gospel reading Jesus sends off his disciples to preach the Good News and spread the Kingdom of God. They told people about life with God.
Like the disciples of Jesus, we are missioned to go and spread the Good News to those who do not know God, even to those we do not know. We are told that "Evangelization happens when the word of Jesus speaks to people's hearts and minds. This means that we must let our faith shine on the world around us, radiating the love of Jesus by the everyday way we speak, think and act." (US Conference of Bishops)
May we, in our own little ways, become bearers of the Good News to others.
Have a good day!
