MONDAY, 28TH Week in Ordinary Time

October 15, 2018 – MONDAY, 28TH Week in Ordinary Time

St. Teresa of Avila, Virgin and Doctor of the Church

Memorial. White.

Gal 4: 22-24, 26-27, 31-5:1 / Lk 11: 29- 32

Spanish mystic St. Teresa of Avila (1515 -1582) reformed the Carmelites with the help of St. John of the Cross (1542- 1591). A Patroness of Spain, she was the first woman declared a Doctor of the Church.

FROM THE 1ST READING:             Gal 4: 22- 24, 31 - 5: 1

It says that Abraham had two sons, one by a slave woman, the other by a free woman, his wife. The son of the slave woman was born in the ordinary way; but the son of the free woman was born in fulfillment of God's promise....

Brethren, we are not children of the slave woman, but of the free woman, Christ freed us to make us really free. So remain firm and do not submit to the yoke of slavery.

GOSPEL READING:           Lk 11: 29- 32

As the crowds increased, Jesus began to speak in this way, "People of the

present time are evil people. They ask for a sign, but no sign will be given to them except the sign of Jonah. As Jonah became a sign for the people of Nineveh, so will the Son of Man be a sign for this generation.

"The Queen of the South will rise up on Judgment Day with the people of these times and accuse them, for she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon and here there is greater than Solomon. The people of Nineveh will rise up on Judgment Day with the people of these times and accuse them, for Jonah's preaching made them turn from their sins, and here there is greater than Jonah."

REFLECTION

In the first reading, Paul reiterates that Christians are saved by their belief in Christ Jesus. Christians have been freed by Christ from the bondage of sin, enabling them to freely accept and follow God's commandments joyfully..

In the Gospel reading Jesus rebukes so many people who refused to listen to the Good News, who, despite all his wonderful cures and miracles, still demanded signs from him. No sign will be given to them, except the sign of Jonah, "Destroy this temple and in three days I will raise it up." (Jn 2: 19)

The people had hardened hearts, were blind and deaf to his ministry. The people of Nineveh listened to Jonah; the Queen of the South traveled far to hear the wisdom of Solomon: yet here there is greater than Jonah and Solomon..

What signs do we see of God's Good News today? May our eyes, ears and hearts see, hear and read these signs.

Have a good day!
