St. Benedict (480 - 547), born in Norcia, organized monastic life with his Rule for the Benedictines. He was proclaimed Patron of Europe by Pope Bl. Paul VI. St. Scholastica (480- 547) was his twin sister.

FROM THE 1ST READING:             Hos 10: 1 - 2, 12

Israel was a spreading vine, rich in fruit. The more his fruit increased, the more altars he built; the more his land prospered, the more he adorned his sacred stones. Their heart is divided! They shall pay for it. Their altars will be thrown down and their sacred stones broken into pieces....

Plow new ground, sow for yourselves justice and reap the harvest of kindness. It is the time to go seeking Yahweh until he comes to rain salvation on you.

GOSPEL READING:           Mt 10: 1 - 7

Then he called his twelve disciples to him and gave them authority over the unclean spirits to drive them out and to heal every disease and sickness.

These are the names of the twelve apostles: first, Simon, called Peter, and his brother Andrew; James, the son of Zebedee, and his brother John; Philip and Bartholomew, Thomas and Matthew, the tax collector; James, the son of Alpheus, and Thaddaeus; Simon the Canaanite, and Judas lscariot, who would betray him.

Jesus sent these Twelve on mission with the instruction: "Do not visit pagan territory and do not enter a Samaritan town. Go instead to the lost sheep of Israel. Go and proclaim this message: The kingdom of God is at hand."

REFLECTION

In the first reading, in the midst of evil and turning away from God, the prophet Hosea calls for conversion and a return to God.

The Twelve whom Jesus named apostles were ordinary people with neither high education nor extraordinary talents and possessions. They were ordinary people with their faults and shortcomings: proud, stubborn and hard-headed. Two would betray Jesus: one three times before simple house-maids and one for thirty pieces of silver.

However, they were basically faithful followers of Jesus. Strengthened by the coming of the Holy Spirit, they preached the Good News of Jesus to the world. Except for the apostle John, all of them gave witness to the Jesus they followed and the Gospel they preached with their lives.

God makes use of the ordinary to accomplish truly extraordinary things. God has decided to make use of and to need people for the spread of his kingdom through the Church.

St. Benedict, founder of the Benedictines, was an outstanding follower of Christ in the sixth century, prescribing prayer, study and work for his monks for the support and spread of the Church and the Kingdom of God. The Benedictines have had great contributions to the Church and the world in monastic life and liturgical worship, in education, art and literature.
