1 Jn 3:7- 10 / Jn 1:35- 42

St. Elizabeth Ann Seton (1774 -1821), married and with five children, converted to Catholicism after being widowed. In 1810 she founded the first Catholic school for underprivileged children in Emmitsburg, MD, USA, which was the start of the US parochial school system. She also founded the Sisters of Charity, the first religious society in the US (1810). Beatified in 1863 and canonized in 1975, she was the first native-born American canonized saint.

GOSPEL READING:     Jn 1:35- 42
On the following day John was standing there again with two of his disciples. As Jesus walked by, John looked at him and said, "There is the Lamb of God." On hearing this, the two disciples followed Jesus. He turned and saw those following, and he said to them, "What are you looking for?" They answered, "Rabbi (which means Master), where are you staying?" Jesus said, "Come and see" So they went and saw where he stayed and spent the rest of that day with him. It was about four o'clock in the afternoon.

Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, was one of the two who heard what John had said and followed Jesus. Early the next morning he found his brother Simon and said to him "We have found the Messiah" (which means the Christ), and he brought Simon to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, "You are Simon, son of John, but you shall be called Cephas" (which means Rock).

REFLECTION
What does "to follow someone" mean? If you "follow someone" on twitter or the social network, you read his/her posts to find out what he/she is doing, feeling and thinking. In the game "follow the leader," the leader is followed and those following imitate whatever the leader is doing.

How do we "follow Jesus"? When Jesus asked the two disciples (Andrew and another disciple of John) in today's Gospel reading who followed Jesus at the urging of John ("There is the Lamb of God.") "What are you looking for?" they answered rather lamely, "Rabbi (which means Master), where are you staying?" Jesus said, "Come and see."

So they went, saw and were so impressed with Jesus they brought others to follow Jesus, "We have found the Messiah." Andrew and his unnamed companion, Andrew's brother Simon-Peter, Philip and his friend Nathanael from Cana were the first followers of Christ. They and many others "followed" Jesus in his public ministry, and after Jesus' death and resurrection and the descent of the Holy Spirit, preached the Good News of Jesus and gave their lives in witness to their faith in and love of Jesus.

We follow Jesus in the same way his first disciples did, this Jesus we know from the Scriptures, the Church and in our prayer-interactions with him.

Like the first disciples, we hopefully urge and lead others to follow him, "We have found the Messiah!"
