St. John, Apostle and Evangelist

27 December 2016 Tuesday
St. John, Apostle and Evangelist
Feast.       White.

1 Jn 1:1 – 4 / Jn 20: 1 – 8.

Born in Bethsaida, St. John, Apostle and Evangelist, "the beloved disciple, was exiled in Patmos under Emperor Diocletian.

Gospel Reading: Jn 20:1 - 8
Now, on the first day after the Sabbath, Mary of Magdala came to the tomb early in the morning, while it was still dark and she saw that the stone blocking the tomb had been moved away. She ran to Peter and the other disciple whom Jesus loved. And she said to them, "They have taken the Lord out of the tomb and we don't know where they have laid him."

Peter then set out with the other disciple to go to the tomb. They ran together but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. He bent down and saw the linen cloths lying flat, but he did not enter.

Then Simon Peter came following him and entered the tomb; he, too, saw the linen cloths lying flat. The napkin, which had been around his head was not lying flat like the other linen cloths but lay rolled up in its place. Then the other disciple who had reached the tomb first also went in; he saw and believed.

Reflection
In this Gospel reading, St. John, together with St. Peter, ran towards the tomb of Jesus and found only the linen wrappings of Jesus but without his body. Younger than Peter, John reached the tomb first but he stopped at the entrance and just looked in.
Out of respect for Peter whom Jesus had commissioned to head his Church, John wished Peter to enter first.  Though the Lord had entrusted his Mother Mary to his care, John humbly recognized and respectedthe primacy of Peter.

When Peter arrived and they both entered the tomb and saw it empty, they "saw and believed."

John gave us an quiet example of respect for Peter. At the appearance of the risen Lord to Peter and the other apostles fishing on the lake, it was John who first recognzed the man on the shore as the Lord, "It is the Lord."
It was the enthusiastic Peter who jumped into the water to be first to join the risen Lord on the shore.

We thank the Lord for John's courage, love and loyalty to the Lord as the only apostle who stood by the cross of the crucified Christ. We thank John for his love and care for Mary whom the dying Lord entrusted to him and whom he took into his own home.
We thank the Lord for John's role in the early Church as apostle and evangelist and for his letters on the love of God for us.

St. John, "the beloved disciple," pray for us and the Church.
