Gn 49: 2, 8 –10 / Mt 1: 1 – 17
[Misa de Aguinaldo. White. With Gloria]
From the 1st Reading: Gn 49: 8 – 10
Judah, your brothers will praise you! You shall seize your enemies by the neck! Your father's sons shall bow before you. Judah, a young lion! You return from the pray, my son! Like a lion he stoops and crouches, and like a lioness, who dares to rouse him?
The scepter shall not be taken from Judah, nor the ruler's staff from between his feet, until he comes to whom it belongs, and who has the obedience of the nations.
From the Gospel Reading: Mt 1:1, 16 - 17
This is the document of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, son of David, son of Abraham. . .
Jacob was the father of Joseph, the husband of Mary, and from her came Jesus who is called the Christ – the Messiah.
There were then fourteen generations in all from Abraham to David, and fourteen generations from David to the deportation to Babylon, and fourteen generations from the deportation to Babylon to the birth of Christ.
Reflection
The first reading says that the "scepter shall not be taken from Judah, nor the ruler's staff from between his feet." Judah is pictured as a "young lion," a symbol of power and courage. Jesus Christ, descended from the tribe of Judah, is the ultimate holder of the scepter, the symbol of kingship. He is the true Lion who radiates power and strength.
The Gospel reading narrates the genealogy of "Jesus Christ, son of David, son of Abraham." Jesus is the descendant or son of David through his foster-father Joseph: "Jacob was the father of Joseph the husband of Mary, and from her came Jesus who is called the Christ, the Messiah." (Mt 1: 18)
The genealogy of Jesus is given in detail to emphasize that he was truly man, truly a Jew.
From the two readings, we learn that indeed "the Word was made flesh; he had his tent pitched among us, and we have seen his Glory, the Glory of the only Son, coming from the Father, fulness of truth and loving kindness" (Jn 1: 14)
We also learn that he was born to rule, to be a king: "You shall conceive and bear a son and you shall call him Jesus. He will be great and shall rightly be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God wil give him the kingdom of David, his ancestor; he will rule over the people of Jacob forever and his reign shall have no need." (Lk 1: 31 – 38)
However, his kingship shall be unique and different, "My kingship does not come from this world. If I were king like those of this world, my guards would have fought to save me from being handed over to the Jews. But my kingship is not from here." (Jn 19: 36)
