Saturday, 32nd Week in Ordinary Time

12 November 2016
Saturday, 32nd Week in Ordinary Time
St. Josaphat, Bishop and Martyr
Memorial.        Red.

3 Jn 5 – 8 / Lk 18: 1 – 8

Born in Poland, St. Josaphat (1580 – 1623), a monk and archeparch of the Ukrainian Catholic Church (Bishop of Polotsk) was killed by a mob of Orthodox Christians.  He worked for the union of Rome and the Ukraininan Church and was the first formally canonized saint of the Eastern Rite (1867).

Gospel Reading: Lk 18: 1 - 8
Jesus told them a parable to show them that they should pray continually and not lose heart. He said, "In a certain town there was a judge who neither feared God nor people. In the same town was a widow who kept coming to him, saying: 'Defend my rights against my opponent.' For a time he refused, but finally he thought: 'Even though I neither fear God nor care about people, this widow bothers me so much I will see that she gets justice; then she will stop coming and wearing me out."

And Jesus explained, "Listen to what the evil judge says. Will God not do justice for his chosen ones who cry to him day and night even if he delays in answering them? I tell you, he will speedily do them justice. Yet, when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on earth?"

Reflection
Children are such wonderful people.  They are easy to please and have a great zest for life.  However, there is one thing that children are good at –  their persistence.  One day a little boy asks his mom for ice cream.  Mom replies by saying that he will get his ice cream on Saturday. Little boy asks, "What day is it today?"  Mom replies, "It's Monday."  The next morning little boy asks mom for ice cream again and mom says that he will get it on Saturday.  In the afternoon, since it was getting hot he asked his mom for ice cream again.  Mom replied with the same answer.  This conversation continued on Wednesday but when Thursday came, mom was already tired of the little boy's pestering about the ice cream so she decided to give in just so he will keep quiet and leave her in peace.

The Gospel reading features this kind of persistence when we pray.  Like the little child, praying with persistence shows that we believe what we are asking for will be given to us by our Father in heaven.  All we need to do is to keep on asking with faith.  Of course we must ask for important things, useful things that will truly benefit us and our fellowmen.
