Friday, 33rd Week in Ordinary Time
Dedication of the Churches of Sts. Peter and Paul in Rome

Acts 28:11 – 16, 30 – 31 / Mt 14:22 – 33

Originally built in the fourth century (300 AD), the basilica of St. Peter was built over his tomb; reconstructed in the 14th century, the present basilica was completed in 1626.

The basilica of St. Paul on the Ostian Way was likewise built over the tomb of St. Paul by Velentinian II in 386.  Destroyed by fire in 1823, the new basilica was consecrated in 1854 by Pope Pius IX, who joined the celebration of the two basilicas into one

From the Gospel Reading: Mt 14:  24 - 33
Meanwhile, the boat was very far from land, dangerously rocked by the waves for the wind was against it.

At daybreak, Jesus came to them walking on the lake. When they saw him walking on the sea, they were terrified, thinking that it was a ghost.  And they cried out in fear.  But at once Jesus said to them, "Courage!  Don't be afraid. It's me!"

Peter answered, "Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you walking on the water."  Jesus said to him, "Come."  And Peter got out of the boat, walking on the water to go to Jesus.  But, in the face of the strong wind, he was afraid and began to sink.   So he cried out, "Lord, save me!" Jesus immediately stretched out his hand and took hold of him, saying, " Man of little faith, why did you doubt?"

As they got into the boat, the wind dropped.  Then those in the boat bowed down before Jesus saying, "Truly, you are the Son of God."

Reflection
Sts. Peter and Paul after evangelizing in Israel, Asia Minor, parts of Greece, eventually went to Rome, stayed there a couple of years and then were both martyred during the reign of Emperor Nero.

In the Gospel reading, the disciples are in a boat battling the bad weather conditions when Jesus comes to them walking on the waters.  This event tells us that, whenever we encounter big problems in our lives, we must look for Jesus to help us.  Only He can calm the waves in our lives and bring us safely to shore.

We need to believe this not only because it is true but also because this is the only way for us to gain courage and strength to endure come what may.  To be Christian isn't a leisurely walk in the park all the time, but can sometimes be an all-out battle in the arena.  So let us gird our loins and use the cardinal virtues of faith, hope and love to stay brave and strong for the devil is prowling around looking for someone to devour.
