Tuesday, 28th Week in Ordinary Time

11 October 2016
Tuesday, 28th Week in Ordinary Time
St. John XXIII, Pope
Green.

Gal 5:1 – 6 / Lk 11:37 – 41

Italian Pope St. John XXIII (1881 – 1963) served in the Vatican diplomatic service and was Patriarch of Venice when he was elected Pope.  He convened Vatican Council II (1962 – 1965), though the Council was completed under Pope Bl. Paul VI.  Beatified by Pope John Paul II in 2000, St. John XXIII was canonized by Pope Francis at the same time as Pope St. John Paul II (1920 – 2005) in April 2014, with Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI in attendance.

1st Reading: Gal 5:1 - 6
Christ freed us to make us really free.  So remain firm and do not submit to the yoke of slavery.  I, Paul, say this to you:  if you receive circumcision, Christ can no longer help you.  Once more I say to whoever receives circumcision: you are now bound to keep the whole Law.  All you who pretend to become righteous through the observance of the Law have separated yourselves from Christ and have fallen away from grace,

As for us, the Spirit imparts to us this hope that through faith we shall be set right with God.

Gospel Reading: Lk 11: 37 - 41
As Jesus was speaking, a Pharisee asked him to have a meal with him. So he went and sat at table. The Pharisee then wondered why Jesus did not first wash his hands before dinner.  But the Lord said to him, "So then, you Pharisees, you clean the outside of the cup and the dish, but inside yourselves you are full of greed and evil. Fools! He who made the outside, also made the inside. But according to you, by the mere giving of alms everything is made clean.

Reflection
The Pharisees were the prime examples of unenlightened and literal interpreters of the words and actions of Jesus. Aside from being unfamiliar with the Law of Love that Jesus preached, they also felt compelled to put Jesus to the test by questioning his teachings and scrutinizing his every move and pointing out what they perceived as flaws and inconsistencies.

Jesus tells them, without mincing words, how they are hypocrites and fools, and although we are not told how the Pharisees reacted, we can see for ourselves how they were mistaken, and we realize how we are blessed with a deeper and purer understanding of the words of Jesus.

In the first reading Paul tells the Galatians about the true freedom Christ had come to give us, as compared to almost slavish adherence and observance of the Law of Moses.

Lord Jesus, help me to be conscious of your presence within me so that I may always strive to be a living sign of your love.
