Sts. Simon and Jude, Apostles

28 October 2016

Friday, 30th Week in Ordinary Time

Sts. Simon and Jude, Apostles

Feast.        Red.

Eph 2:19 – 22 / Lk 6:12 – 16

Sts. Simon and Jude, Apostles, preached in Mesopotamia where they were martyred.  St. Jude is widely venerated as the Patron of the Impossible.

1st Reading: Eph 2:19 – 22

Now you are no longer strangers or guests, but fellow citizens of the holy people.  You are of the household of God.  You are the house whose foundations are the apostles and prophets, and whose cornerstone is Christ Jesus.  In him the whole structure is joined together and rises to be a holy temple in the Lord. In him you too are being built to become the spiritual sanctuary of God.

Gospel Reading: Lk 6: 12 - 16

At this time Jesus went out into the hills to pray, spending the whole night in prayer with God. When day came, he called his disciples to him and chose twelve of them whom he called apostles: Simon, whom he named Peter, and his brother Andrew, James and John; Philip and Bartholomew;  Matthew and Thomas; James son of Alpheus and Simon called the Zealot; Judas son of James, and Judas Iscariot, who would be the traitor.

Reflection

As part of the Church, we are no longer "strangers or guests" and are part of a body with Christ as its head.  We have all been chosen by Jesus to be part of his Church the same way he chose the apostles.  This is a grace from God and we are called to share this blessing with our fellowman.

How do we share God's choice of us to be followers of Jesus?  We tell the whole world of his love.  We believe that, if all men would come to a knowledge of God as Father and of Jesus as our Savior, then peace and harmony can be established on earth.

The world we live in is in disarray.  There are so many wars, killings, immorality, abortions, murders, rapes, selfish acts, etc.  Man is lost.  He has lost his fulcrum.  But Jesus is that fulcrum which can bring peace, order and justice back to our world.  Yet someone must preach this to the nations as the apostles did in the primitive church.  Someone like you and me.  We can do this in many different ways, as long as it is Jesus who is manifested to others.  Let us not think that we chose to do this work because of our own virtues.  But rather that it is God who has chosen us and is giving us the desire to share our experiences and blessing with others.
