Monday, 28th Week in Ordinary Time

10 October 2016

Monday, 28th Week in Ordinary Time

Green.

Gal 4:22 - 24, 26 - 27, 31 - 5:1 / Lk 11: 29 – 32

From the 1st Reading: Gal 4: 31 – 5: 1

Brethren, we are not children of the slave woman, but of the free woman. Christ freed us to make us really free.  So remain firm and do not submit again to the yoke of slavery.

Gospel Reading: Lk 11: 29 - 32

As the crowd increased, Jesus began to speak in this way, "People of the present time are troubled people. They ask for a sign, but no sign will be given to them except the sign of Jonah.  As Jonah became a sign the people of Nineveh, so will the Son of Man be a sign for this generation.

"The Queen of the South will rise up on Judgment Day with the people of these times and accuse them, for she came from the ends of the earth to hear the Wisdom of Solomon; and here there is greater than Solomon. The people of Nineveh will rise up on Judgment Day with the people of these times and accuse them, for Jonah's preaching made them turn from their sins, and here there is greater than Jonah."

Reflection

The Gospel reading today talks of signs and the different reactions of the people to these signs. As Jonah was a prophet to call the ancient Ninevites to repentance and a change of life, so were John the Baptist and our Lord Jesus in their generation.

We may condemn most of the people of our Lord's time for their refusal to accept the good news preached to them. However, we just have to look at the world around us and see that we are no different from them because humanity throughout the ages has not changed much. We have taken for granted the witness of countless people of which many gave up their lives throughout two millennia of the proclamation of the gospel.

In the gospels, the evangelists described the miracles of Jesus as signs. Surely they meant that the extraordinary phenomena which the people saw or heard of, pointed to something beyond the events.

Closer to our times, we have the apparition of our Blessed Mother in Mexico to Juan Diego and her image miraculously imprinted on his cloak which resulted in the conversion of the Americas. How about the Church approved apparitions of our Blessed Mother at Lourdes in the 1800s and Fatima in the early 1900s? What were the messages of our Blessed Mother to us in these apparitions? Have we acted upon them in the way we live our lives?
